As the title says, the opener of today's doubleheader was about as ugly as it could for the Yanks. Bad pitching, bad hitting, bad defense, they looked like the damn Bad News Bears out there.

Mussina didn't have much today, allowing five runs on eight hits in five innings. He was pitching well until the 5th when the Rays loaded the bases with nobody out, and eventually scored three runs to put the game away. Mussina still should have three starts so his quest for 20 wins is not over yet.

The Yankees defense gave the Rays a lot of extra outs, even though some weren't scored as errors, and that didn't help the Yankees pitchers either. Jason Giambi threw two balls away at first, and there were several other plays that should have been made that weren't.

For the 47th time this season the Yankees offense scored two runs or less, almost 1/3 of there games. That stat is amazing to me. James Shields was great today, and deserves credit for his great performance, but as they have been lately, the Yankees at-bats were pathetic. They had way too many quick at-bats, and they look completely lost. It seems that sometimes these guys can't wait for the game to end.

The lone run came in the 9th inning on a Bobby Abreu solo homer off reliever Trevor Miller. Besides Abreu who had two hits and the homer, the only other guy who showed up today was Derek Jeter, he went 3-for-4, and made two very nice plays in the field. He is now six hits away from Lou Gehrig's for all time hits at The Stadium.

I can't wait for next year (I have CC and Sheets thoughts in my future!)...But in all seriousness my wife and I are going next Sunday and sadly its likely the last game ever at Yankee Stadium. Kinda funny how this year has gone and if things end the way they appear we may finish 4th! Yuck! It will be great though to kick the snot out of Baltimore for the final game! We got tickets in the upper tier for less than $200 which wasnt too bad (if anyone else is interested?) http://www.esellout.com/ResultsGeneralAtVenue.aspx?kwds=New+York+Yankees&venid=68
At least Hughes got the call up after the AAA playoffs, it would be a nice way to salvage his season with a couple good appearances heading into the offseason either as a part of Yankees future lure OR in a potential trade! LET'S GO YANKEES!

I love the "Goats of the Game" comment. So true.
