Can someone tell me where this team has been all year? They've won three in a row and six of their last seven, and they've done it in impressive fashion. The team we all thought we had back in April has decided to finally show up now when the season is all but over. Thanks guys.
Carl Pavano improved to 4-1 with five good innings tonight. He allowed two runs on six hits, walked one and struck out two. He wasn't great, but he was good enough to pick up the win. Pavano was also helped by Brett Gardner, who robbed Luke Scott of what could have been a solo homer. The play was Torii Hunter-esque. He also threw out a runner at home plate in the first. Gardner has shown over the last week or so that he can be a great centerfielder, and he's starting to show improvement with bat as well. I would not be surprised if he's the Yankees starting centerfielder in '09.
The bullpen was the star tonight; Phil Coke, Brian Bruney, Damaso Marte, Joba Chamberlain, and Mariano Rivera combined for four shutout innings, they allowed two hits (both allowed by Mo), walked one and struck out seven. Coke and Bruney struck out two a piece, and Joba struck out the side in the 8th.
Trailing 2-0 in the 3rd the Yankees came back to tie it. Robinson Cano led off the inning with a solo homer, his 14th of the year. Ivan Rodriguez then singled and scored on a Brett Gardner double to tie the game.
Two innings later Johnny Damon singled with one out and moved to third on a single from Derek Jeter. Then with A-Rod at the plate, O's starter Radhames Liz threw a wild pitch, and the Yanks had the lead for good.
Toronto lost to Boston tonight so the tragic number is down to two. But, on the bright side (if you can call it that) the Yankees are now alone in third place - hey, it's better than fourth.
