Tonight was all about Roy Halladay. The game meant nothing to both teams, and the only guy in the ballpark playing for anything was the Jays' ace. He was going for win number 20, and it sure looked like he wanted it. He went the distance, allowing just two runs on six hits, while walking one, and striking out five. It was Halladay's ninth complete game of the season.
At least the Carl Pavano era is over. He made the last start of his embarrassing Yankee career, and got knocked around the year for 3.2 innings. He allowing five runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out one. He ends his career in pinstripes with nine wins in 26 starts over four injury plagued seasons.
Offensively there isn't much to talk about. Robinson Cano drove in the Yankees first run in the 3rd with a RBI single scoring Brett Gardner who had previously doubled. Two innings later the Yankees added another on a double play off the bat of Francisco Cervelli. Besides that, the only thing worth mentioning is Brett Gardner, who picked up three hits in a game for the second time in his career.
There was also a bit of unsettling news tonight; Mariano Rivera was sent back to New York to have an MRI on his sore shoulder. According to Peter Abraham, Brian Cashman said that the Yankees just want to make sure Rivera is OK, and that he's not too concerned. Tyler Kepner wrote that there is a chance Rivera might need arthroscopic surgery, but the procedure would be minor and he would be ready for spring training.
In non-Yankee related news, congratulations go out to Joe Torre and Don Mattingly whose Dodgers clinched the NL West tonight. I wish we were clinching something other than 3rd place.
