In the bottom of the first inning, on the first pitch he saw, Derek Jeter hit a hard grounder under the glove of White Sox third baseman Juan Uribe for his 1270th hit at Yankee Stadium. The hit moved him past Lou Gehrig and into sole possession of first place all-time in hits at The Stadium. When you consider the players that have called this stadium home, and you see Jeter's name on top of that list, it's pretty impressive.

Besides that the night was pretty uneventful and boring. Andy Pettitte lost his fifth straight start, and is now 1-7 with a 6.45 ERA in his last 10 starts. He wasn't terrible tonight, and kept the Yankees in the game, but he should be better. In six innings he allowed four runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out four.

Earlier today there were reports that Pettitte has a shoulder problem that will need rest to heal, like an off-season's worth of rest. There have also been reports that his lack of training this past off-season is catching up with him. Some people just think he's done (I don't believe that). Whatever it is, he sure isn't the same pitcher he was for the first four months of the season.

Ever since mid-August Jose Veras has been very shaky, and tonight was no different. He allowed a run on three hits and a walk in one inning of work. Dan Giese also gave up a run in his inning of work. On the bright side Dave Robertson did not allow a run, and struck out three in the 9th.

Tonight was the 48th time the Yankees were held to two runs or less. Jason Giambi drove in a run with a solo homer in the 4th inning, and the second run came an inning earlier on a Johnny Damon RBI double.

The Yankees tragic number is now three; any combination of Yankees losses and Red Sox wins that equals three will eliminate the Yankees from playing in the postseason.
