Dreams of October baseball continue to slip away for the Yanks and us fans. Tonight they missed an opportunity to cut the Red Sox lead to 6.5 games as they failed to complete a sweep of the Rays in Tampa. Instead they sit 7.5 games out with just 22 to play.

Scott Kazmir walked five, but don't let that fool you, he had great stuff tonight. He overpowered the Yanks in six strong innings of work, holding the Yankees to no runs on just one hit, while striking out seven. Combine that great start with Darrell Rasner's putrid start and this game was pretty much over after two innings. Rasner couldn't get out of the 2nd, lasting just an inning and a third, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks. “I’m ashamed of what I did tonight,” Rasner said. “It’s embarrassing.” Yes Darrell, it is.

Alfredo Aceves was very good in relief and saved the bullpen. He lasted five innings, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out four and walking two. The lone run came on a Willy Aybar solo homer in the 4th. He threw 97 pitches on the night, 61 for strikes. It's a shame he didn't start tonight. Hopefully after today's performance he will start in place of Rasner next time around.

The offense that did nothing for the first eight innings finally came to life in the 9th scoring five times, but it was too little too late. A-Rod and Jeter both homered in the inning; it was home run number 550 for A-Rod. Cody Ransom had a great game, going 3-for-3 with a double, a RBI, one run scored, and a walk.

At least the Giants won their season opener tonight 16-7 over the Redskins.
