Mike Mussina started for the Yanks tonight and pitched five scoreless innings to pick up his 19th win of the season. He allowed four hits, struck out six, and didn't walk a batter. And would have stayed in the game, but he was hit on the elbow by a line drive in the 3rd, and it starting to bother him a lot as the game went on. It's the first time since 1996 that Mussina has won 19 games in a season. During the post game Mussina said his arm hurt, but he was going to prepare himself for his next start like he always does. Moose has never won 20 games; unless something is broken he's not going to miss Sunday's start.
Jason Giambi singled with one out in the 2nd, Xavier Nady followed with a double to put men on second and third with one out. Robinson Cano then hit a RBI groundout to second to give the Yanks a 1-0 lead.
Giambi put the Yankees up 2-0 with a solo homer in the 4th, his 32th of the season.
Their third run came in the 7th; Robinson Cano, who has really been hitting since he changed his batting stance, hit a one out double. Then, with Cody Ransom at the plate Cano moved to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a passed ball.
But still, even with the Yankees win tonight is not a good night. In fact it was a terrible night, because at Fenway Park in Boston the Red Sox beat the Indians 5-4 to officially eliminate the Yankees from playoff contention. Now I knew this was coming, we all did, but as long as they were still alive I still could hold on to some hope. But now it's official, the Yankees will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1993.
Hopefully they continue to play like they have for the past ten games, show some pride, and go out with a bang.

Thanks a lot, Cliff. Nice pitching, you pathetic jerk.
I was kinda hoping that somehow we'd still be in it going into that final series against Boston. That would have been something. Moose winning his 20th to close out the season, eliminate Boston, and send the Yanks to the playoffs. Oh well haha.
This is a weird feeling. I'm not even really all that disappointed now. I was more disappointed on or around September 1st or so, when I started to face the reality that the team was playing too poorly and was too beat up to make it. Right now I'm just sorta "meh" about it all.
Guess we have to regroup and get back at it in 2009. Maybe 2008 was a bit of a wake up call for some people. I think every year for a while now this team has been thinking more about how to win in the playoffs when it's still just spring training rather than focusing on just playing good, solid team baseball day in and day out. Maybe now they will realize that you don't worry about being clutch, being the hero, and prepping yourself for the pressure situations in October and how to do well in the playoffs and all that garbage, and they will just go out there and play hard and do what it takes to win games during the regular season, as that's what will translate best into the post season.
Here's to a long and interesting off-season, and hopefully a great 2009.
And in the meantime, go NY Giants!
What's really pissed me off this year was when they went on that 8 game winning streak in July, and were like tied for the Wild Card and 2nd place in the East, and people actually started to think they were going to make it.
Pinstripes,
I was hoping the same thing, too bad it didn't work out. I guess we all know deep down it wouldn't. I have a feeling 2009 will be different, and this team will be back.
Hell, if they didn't lose Posada and Wang you have to believe they'd be five games better than they were. The injury to Joba didn't help either.
