ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE: The Arizona Fall League opened league play Tuesday. 7 Yankees are playing for the Peoria Javelinas. Scott Aldred, Trenton's pitching coach is on the coaching staff. So far the Javelinas record is 3-2. They lead the AFL National Division.
Phil Hughes got the opening day start and threw 5 shutout innings of 1 hit ball. His command was off from not pitching in 2 weeks. He struck out 7 and walked 4, hitting 1 batter. Hughes got the win throwing 86 pitches-- 49 strikes. He had 6 ground outs - 2 fly outs.
Jeff Marquez threw 2 innings of shutout relief on Wednesday. Marquez gave up 1 hit and had 2 strikeouts.
Kevin Whelan made his 1st appearance in relief Friday throwing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing 1 hit, with 3 strikeouts.
Humberto Sanchez made his 1st appearance Friday and had all kinds of control problems. He loaded the bases on 3 walks. He then gave up a bases clearing double and a RBI double. Sanchez also had a wild pitch. He went just 0.2 IP, and allowed 4 runs, on 2 hits, and 3 walks. He took the loss 0-1.
Austin Jackson was the hitting hero on opening day going 2-4 with 4 RBI to back up Hughes win. He had a 2-run triple, RBI single and a sac fly. Wednesday he went 1-4 with a RBI single, walk and 3 strikeouts. Thursday - 0-4 hitting into 2 double plays. Jackson didn't start Friday's game but did pinch hit, lining out to short. Saturday night Jackson went 0-3 with a walk and 2 strikeouts. After a great start he finished slowly. So far he's 3-16 with a triple and 5 RBI, 5 K's--2 BB, BA .176.
Juan Miranda made his 1st start Thursday going 4-4 with 2 doubles, triple, single, with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. Friday he went 2-4 with a triple and a RBI double. Miranda so far is 6-8 with 2 triples, 3 doubles and 2 RBI.
Kevin Russo got the start opening day at 2nd base going 0-3. He walked, stole a base and scored. He pinch hit Thursday going 0-1. Friday he started in left field going 1-5 as he singled and scored, with 2 strikeouts. Saturday Russo started at 3rd base, going 0-4 with 4 ground outs. He's really struggling at the plate so far going 1-13 batting only .077.
HAWAII WINTER LEAGUE: Andrew Brackman, Jeremy Bleich, Austin Romine and Damon Sublett are playing for the Waikiki Beach Boys. Waikiki is 6-7 in HWB play.
Andrew Brackman made his 3rd league start Thursday going 3.1 IP allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits. He had problems with his command giving up 4 walks and 2 wild pitches. He struck out 4. Brackman threw 77 pitches--38 for strikes taking the loss. So far in HWB he is 1-2 with a 5.91 ERA. in 3 starts.
Jeremy Bleich made his 2nd start last Saturday (10-4) going 3.1 IP, 3 runs on 6 hits. He struggled with his command giving up 4 walks and had 1 K. In his first 2 starts he allowed 8 walks in 6 innings. Bleich made his best start of the HWB Friday (10-10) going 6 shutout innings, allowing only 4 hits. Bleich picked up 6 K's and did not allow a walk. He threw 76 pitches--54 strikes. A huge improvement over his previous starts. ERA 3.75
Damon Sublett cooled off from his hot first week when he hit .444. For the week Sublett was 6-21 in 5 games. He had 1 homer, 4 rbi and scored 5 runs. He also struck out 8 times. Overall in league play he's batting .333 in 30 at bats, with 9 RBI, but 11 K's.
Austin Romine played in 3 games this week going 3-9, with a double, 2 singles, and a sac fly. He also scored 2 runs. So far in league play he's 5-16 batting .313 with 2 RBI and 1 double.
