Yanks Discussing Peavy Deal

From Dan Graziano:

The Yankees are one of several teams that have had preliminary discussions with the San Diego Padres about a possible trade for 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy.

According to a person familiar with the substance of Thursday's organizational meetings in Tampa, Peavy was a hot topic as word has begun to circulate around baseball that the Padres are interested in shopping Peavy. The person requested anonymity because the contents of the meeting were not intended to be made public.

The person said the Yankees had a feeling the Padres might be further down the road in discussions with other teams, such as the Atlanta Braves. And even a very strong offer might not be enough to get Peavy, since his contract includes a no-trade clause. But if the Yankees decided to make young pitchers such as Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy available, they believe they could put together an attractive package for the Padres to at least consider.
Peavy's no-trade clause could kill this deal before it starts. I've read several times that Peavy wants to stay in the NL and doesn't want to come to New York.

I'd be a lot happier if the Yankees signed CC instead of making a trade for Peavy. I've mentioned my reasons before.

Here's an update from Ed Price:

"He has a strong preference for the National League," Barry Axelrod said of Peavy, the San Diego Padres ace who is being shopped. "He has a strong preference for a team that has a chance to win in the next few years."

As the Star-Ledger reported, the Yankees have had preliminary discussions with the Padres on Peavy and believe that if they are willing to part with young pitching they could pique San Diego's interest.

"He feels comfortable" in the National League, Axelrod said. "He feels he knows the hitters there. He's a good hitter himself."

"The Padres came to him and basically said, 'If we could make a trade, would you be willing to waive your no-trade?' " Axelrod said. "He said, 'If that's what you want to do, if that's what's going to help the team, I would agree to go certain places."
It really doesn't sound like this guy wants to pitch in the AL, so if that's the case I don't think the Yankees should force the issue. Let him stay in the NL where he's comfortable.

There was also an article today that said he would wave his no-trade clause to go to the Houston Astros. So maybe that's where he'll end up.

Have you seen CC's career post season stats? (Peavy's are not much better)

Then look at CC all-star game stats.

Seems that when the bright lights are on, CC's is in the dark.

is it mid-november when the first trades can be made, or later?

IAN KENNEDY, take him please. I never thought of him being great when i first saw him. hughes can still be great, and develop into a peavy type pitcher anyway. it would probably take hughes, jackson and possibly another prospect or 2 like betances or montero.

if we did that AND signed cc, we wouldnt have to spend money on both pettitte and moose. the money for pettitte next year will probably be right around what peavy will make. we can afford both cc and peavy. it may be costly in 4 or 5 years when nboth would be making 20 million a year, but thats down the road, we'll have more money coming off the books every year.

Mike,

CC's career postseason ERA is 7.92, which is awful, but Peavy's is over 12, and that doesn't include getting hammered in that one game playoff last year against Colorado.

CC is the better pitcher, and he would only cost money. Peavy is going to cost Cano and/or Hughes and then some. I just don't think it's worth it.

Anon,

I'm not sure when trades can start being made.

Do you really think it's worth it to trade Hughes, Jackson + plus two more prospects like you mentioned for Peavy? That's not even what it would have cost to get Johan, and he's twice the pitcher Peavy is.

I really think Peavy + AL East + NY will be a disaster.

Very well said....And let me add, NY Media in that equation.

By the way, any mention of Hughes, Jackson, and Montero in the same deal is insane. Let's go ahead and mortgage our farm system. It turned out so well the last time around.

Is it worth all that money for a regular season pitcher, just to have him choke it up in the 1st round of the play-offs?

Been there,,,,

Getting to the postseason is the goal. There's nothing wrong with signing a pitcher who does great during the regular season - we could have used a few more of them this year, right?

It should be noted that CC made three or four starts on three days rest before that playoff start this year.

But if not CC then who?

Do you really want the Yankees to go into '09 with a rotation of Wang, Joba, Pettitte, Hughes and ?????

Not in Yankee-land. As the Captain says, the season is a failure unless you win the world series. Cashman stated the same when he signed his new deal.

I'm not the kind of person who goes and throws names of who the Yankees should get. You will very rarely see that in my blog.

I am sure there are pitchers out there that will be available.

Sometimes the most obvious choice is not the correct one.

I really don't care what Jeter has to say. I think that whole "World Series or bust" idea was killed this year when the Yanks missed the postseason.

And I think we are all aware that you cannot with the World Series unless you actually make the postseason.

We all know who is going to be on the market. It's CC, Burnett, Peavy (via trade), Sheets, Dempster, Garland, Oliver Perez and Lowe. There isn't much more out there, so those are the Yanks' options.

The whole point is making it to the post season. After that, it really does come down to having strong starting pitching, a stacked bullpen, and a hot offense. So yes, I would love to have CC. There is no proof that given the chance with the Yankees, he wouldn't perform on the biggest stage. Hell, would you guys think any of the Phillies staff would perform in the clutch? No one had seen it until this year. Yet here they are in the World Series. So all those Yankees fans talking about the postseason, let's take things one step at a time.

Greg,

I'm not saying that the Yanks wont go get any of the pitchers you mentioned, but I'll bet you a buck that one of the Yankees starting 5 will be a pitcher from outside the organization that is NOT one of the ones you mentioned.

That's fair Mike, but for now we can only discuss the options we've heard about. And these are the options we've heard about.
