Yanks Eying Two of the Three Big Name FA Pitchers

I forgot to mention that during Jon Heyman's interview with Mike Francesa yesterday he said that the Yankees are looking to sign two of the three big name free agent pitchers this off-season. The guys the Yanks have their eyes on are CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Derek Lowe.

Heyman wrote about it today on SI.com and said:
The Yankees are said to want to sign two out of three starting pitchers they're coveting -- CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe. Sabathia is, of course, their No. 1 target. But Yankees players seem to love the idea of signing Burnett, a pitcher who has dominated them.
I'll be happy if they just sign CC and bring back Pettitte and Moose (if he doesn't retire). But if I had to pick two of these three it would be tough. Obviously CC would be my first pick, but then it gets difficult. If I had a guarantee that Burnett would stay healthy he'd be the obvious no. two pick, but there is no guarantees so I might have to pick Lowe. It's a tough call. Which two would you pick?

any word on Yu Darvish or any other Japanese pichers?

Burnett I would pick, just because he's younger and has filty stuff. He looks like craves the spotlight, and always shuts down the Yankees, and Red Sox too.

Not at the moment Dan.

I'm not sure if he's even going to hit the market this year. It may not be till 2010 or 2011 that he'll come to the Majors.

I love Burnett's stuff - it's just nasty. It's all about health with him. And you're right, he's great against the Yanks and Sox, which is always a good thing, it shows he raises his game to the competition, and doesn't mind the spotlight as you said.

It's a tough call, but that's how this whole off-season will be for the Yanks - which moves to make and which to avoid.

i fear the sox getting him, just like when we had "interest" in schilling and then beckett, or atleast i heard we did. o and matsuzaka too. he's going to want a bunch of money, and at least 3 of the teams in the al east will try and get him. i dont want him signing with the mets either.

Dan, are you talking about Burnett?

I could definitely see the Sox giving him an offer, but they may be scares off by their Matt Clement signing, just as the Yanks may be scared off due to their Carl Pavano singing.

I wouldn't mind him going to the NL, even if that means him signing with the Mets. At least he'll be out of our division.

I'm really not sure what's going to happen with AJ.

yes, burnett.

d lowe is 3rd out of those 3 for me.

I don't really like Lowe or burnett, but if burnett stays healthy, I can see the yanks keeping him for a while.

If A.J. stays healthy, then he could fit in nicley in the Yanks' rotation. I think a 12 or 15 win season next year would be acceptable.

But, what if he turns into Pavano? He was having a great career until he came to New York.

I don't even want to talk about Pavano.

I do not see why the Yankees cannot sign CC and then trade for another starter. It does not even need to be Peavy. Greinke would be a great pickup.

Lets not waste anymore money on bad japanese pitchers

After Igawa I think the yanks learned there leason.

Anon,

You're right, there is no reason why they can't sign CC and trade for someone, but the Yankees may not want to trade anybody, which is why I think they want to sign two pitchers. Either way, I like Greinke too.

CC and Burnett (sounds like a lousy show on ABC, CBS, or NBC, no? One of those shows where the men are all portrayed as "wimps" and the women are the clever, tough, "in-charge" types.
