Yanks Have Seven Unsold $600K Luxury Suites at New Stadium

From Bloomberg.com:
The New York Yankees have seven luxury suites priced at $600,000 a season left for sale at their new stadium and the club isn't concerned that the economic crisis will hamper its ability to sell them, chief operating officer Lonn Trost said.

The $1.3 billion ballpark has 47 luxury suites, though the Yankees aren't selling all of them. Some will be held for corporate sponsors, Trost said today.

Suites priced at $850,000 to $650,000 are already sold out and for a minimum of five years, Trost said. He declined to comment on how many suites in total were sold.

"We are reflective of and conscious of the state of the economy,'' Trost said in an interview. "From a micro view, we don't see any evidence of modifications or changes taking place.''

New York may be hurt the most following the collapse of Wall Street firms Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., Bear Stearns Cos. and American International Group Inc. Some 64,000 financial-services jobs in New York and surrounding counties may be lost by the second quarter of 2010, according to Moody's Economy.com.

"We recognize what the fans want. We recognize what the fans abilities are, and we recognize what the economic trends are now and the past and the future,'' Trost said. "We are well aware of what is going on in the world and we are well aware of the new stadium.''
While the Yankees don't sound like they're too worried about selling these remaining boxes it is mentioned in the article that
The New York Mets, who are also moving into a new stadium next season, sold out their 49 luxury boxes for as much as $500,000.
It has to bother the Yankees a little bit that the Mets have already sold out all of their boxes while they have not. And, with all that's going on with this economy you have to believe that in the upcoming years there may be some side-effects that hurt the Yankees, as well as the rest of baseball.

Wouldn't it be something if a few years down the road all the cheap seats are packed with fans, while the box seats and luxury boxes are empty? .... Oh wait... that's how it is by the 6th inning on most nights anyway.

It's a slow day in Yankee-Land, so this is all the news I've got. Sorry.

Yankee Land sucks these days uh. But I guss this is good enough.

Rays and Red Sox still tied. How do you think going to score first?

Go on Scott Proctor's Arm blog there's something that you guys want to see.

Greg Cohen said...

Are you talking about that Rays T-shirt?

Yea, pretty stupid if you ask me. They've had one good year, ever.

Yea that rays t-shirt.

Anonymous said...

I saw that shirt too, but on Pete Abe's blog. Really fucking stupid. These idiots haven't won anything ever and they're acting like they run the sport. If they weren't playing the Red Sox I'd been hoping they get swept.

Anonymous said...

Exactly, these idiots are acting like they own baseball. But guess what rays. You guys are still tied with the red sox.

The Mets have sold out their boxes for prices "as much as $500,000", meaning that's the highest price box. The Yankees remaining boxes at $600,000 are more expensive than the most expensive Mets boxes, and they've already sold out the $850,000 and $650,000 boxes. All this without people even being able to tour the new stadium yet.

Once it nears completion, and all the amenities, bars, and private lounges are available to tour, they will easily sell out the remaining boxes, IF they're still left unsold at that time.

You're probably right Pinstripes, but I give the Mets some credit for not pricing their luxury boxes over $500K.

Well, I don't think I can give them credit for that. If they thought they could get more for them, they would have charged more. It's not like they thought out of the kindness of their heart, "you know, we could get $750k for these, but we owe something to these luxury box buyers, so let's shave $250k off the price."

Teams will charge what they think market will pay, not a penny less. It's pretty much supply and demand, and the Yankees are charging what they feel people are willing to pay, and that's probably what the Mets did as well.

I don't think there's any doubt that the Yankees are a more popular team, and that's most likely where the higher demand is. Plus, from the looks of things, many of the new YS luxury suites are catering to an even more extravagant crowd, with better restaurants and amenitites to cater to such a crowd than the Mets are attempting to. Another reason for the higher pricing.

Either way, it's good that the Mets sold out their luxury boxes. Even at $500,000, that's a steep price, so it's good news for baseball any time you can sell such expensive tickets to a game.

I wouldnt pay 600,000 to see:

cano misplaying ground balls, damon drop fly balls, baserunners falling down, poor pitching, arod striking out with risp, guys failing to bunt etc

Pinstripes,

I'm not giving them credit for being good hearted, I'm giving them credit for understanding the market that they're dealing with. That's all.

I'll throw down $100 bucks Mike, that's about all I can afford right now.
