O'Brien: Yanks Did Not Offer AJ $80 Million

I guess I shouldn't be surprised anymore when I find out that the NY Post made something up out of thin air.

From Kat O'Brien:
The Blue Jays already have offered a four-year, $54-million deal to retain Burnett, according to the Toronto Star. The Yankees' offer is expected to top the Blue Jays' in average annual value. However, a source shot down a report that the Yankees would offer five years and $80 million. They will not make an opening bid of more than four years or anywhere near $80 million, the source said.

The Yankees' source said, "We're just talking parameters."
Ken Rosenthal backs this up:
Burnett turns 32 on Jan. 3. The Yankees intend to offer him a four-year deal, according to one source, not the five-year, $80-million proposal that was reported as a possibility on Tuesday.
A four year deal for $15-16 MM sounds a lot better than five years to me.

Both O'Brien and Rosenthal also said that the Red Sox will be major players in the Burnett sweepstakes.

4 years is better, but still not ideal for a 32-year-old power pitcher with a history of injury. But since Toronto set the market on him, I guess the Yanks will have to play ball.

Four years work for me.

Oh my god. FOX is saying Moose said he will retire. I hope that's not true.
