A group that tracks every ball hit in the majors says Derek Jeter is the worst fielder in baseball.
Stats guru Bill James, author of the "Baseball Abstract," and a panel of nine other voters, ranked Jeter 22nd among all major-league shortstops, with one calling Jeter "the least effective defensive player in the major leagues, at any position."
Jeter received one 10th-place vote in balloting for the 2008 Fielding Bible Awards, announced yesterday. One panel member comes from Baseball Info Solutions (BIS), a group that ... well, just say they do their research.
"They watched film of every major-league game, and had recorded every ball off the bat by the direction in which it was hit [the vector], the type of hit [groundball, flyball, line-drive, popup, etc.] and by how hard the ball was hit [softly hit, medium, hard hit]," according to James.
In an earlier article that appears on James' Fielding Bible Web site, BIS ripped Jeter.
"They had analyzed the outcomes to determine who was best at turning hit balls into outs," James wrote. "One of their conclusions was that Jeter was probably the least effective defensive player in the major leagues, at any position."
Even though I thought Jeter had something of a bounce back year defensively, he still was nothing special. But with that said I'm surprised by the "worst defensive player in the sport" ranking, but hey, I'm not the stat guru.

And thats another reason why we need to leave 1B open, Jeter could be a nice fit there.
You have a point, but Jeter is stubborn and for some reason the Yankees allow him to determine where he's going to play. So we may have to wait two or three years for him to swallow his pride and switch positions.
i agree elizer, but i think that this may be another reason why we wont sign teixeira. b/c we have to leave it open for jeter/posada/

You are right Greg and thats why I didnt like the contract we gave him. Hopefully he realize soon he is not what he used to be.
Move Jeter to second....It makes sense...His biggest drawback is his range isn't as good as it used to be. It's not that he doesn't have an understanding of how to play the middle infield. He physical skills are starting to let him down. So second seems an ideal fit. Especially if the Yankees deal Cano in the offseason

I think you're wrong on that, you need as much range to play 2B as to SS you definitely need a stronger arm and accuracy to play SS and Jeter has lost a lot of the skills he used to posses.
I think Abreu is the worst but moving Jeter is not a bad idea.

Jeter would move to LF. You don't pass up Teixeira just to move Jeter. Terrible thinking
If you sign Teixeira to a long term deal (we're going to have to) what are you going to do with Montero when he is ready in 2 yrs Jeter be in left by then, A-Rod be close to a position change himself the same with Posada. We will be in the same position as of today with 3-4 of big contract players to play 1-2 positions.
1B is by far the easiest position to find good talent so why are we in such a "need" to fill what I call the retirement position.

Spot will be open by then. After 2009, Matsui and Damon will be off the books. LF will be wide open for Jeter. It's a perfect fit

Texiera will not sign with the Yankees. He would rather go to Baltimore! As a matter of fact, four years from now, the AL East will look like this:
