The Yankees' farm system is strong enough to match up with the Padres if the teams revive their discussions on right-hander Jake Peavy. The Padres, according to one major-league source, told the Yankees that a deal would be possible even if the Yankees declined to offer right-hander Phil Hughes.

I was under the impression that this was impossible. I'm very interested to find out what it would take to get Peavy without Hughes. I guess it would start with Kennedy and Jackson and they'd probably have to add another prospect or two.

Sherman says this is all smoke and mirrors. I believe him on this score. The bottom line is that Peavy does not want to be a Yankee, and will block any trade that would make him so. The Yanks have what the Pads want, w/ or w/o Hughes, but that was never the issue.
From what I understand Peavy wants the Padres to check out all the NL options first, and if they can't make a deal with one of them, then he'd allow for a deal to the Angels or Yankees.
I also very surprised they could get him without giving up Hughes.
I think Peavy is overrated, so I'd prefer the Yanks stay away.
My wish list is as follows: Swisher was great pick-up, but his value will be best as an everyday utilityman. And no matter how much pitching the Yanks get, they need to shore up a week defense, get younger, and score a lot more runs than they give up. So, after CC Sabathia, their #2 target should still be Teixeira. Then Burnett (I like him better than Lowe, but would be okay with Lowe) and then either Mussina or Pettitte. I prefer Pettitte, though, b/c he is a little younger and I can't get Moose's '07 season out of my mind. The older he gets the more likely '07 is to '08 from him. Pettitte's line drive and strikeout rates last year weren't bad. He was hurt by bad defense. He isn't the Pettitte of 5 years ago, but I think he is/will be still effective.
I agree with everything you said except for one thing. If the Yankees can get Peavy and not get ripped off, I think they should do it. That's a big IF.
He is overrated, I'm not arguing that, but he's still a damn good pitcher so it might be worth the risk. Especially if they don't have to give up Hughes.
If the Yankees had to give up Cano, Hughes, Jackson, Montero, Romane, or Brackman in the deal, I'd stay away.
Nice job by Eric listing the good and the bad, I like the Swisher signing too, adn I think Peavy could actually help, but only as a #4 or #5 starter. He doesn't pitch deep into games, and we have enough of those pitchers already. Hughes and Kennedy need 1 more year, Kennedy should get more time in the minors to work on his pitches. If we can get CC and Sabathia, I'm still praying they don't give CC $140+ million, and Burnett, we can use Hughes as a starter and send Kennedy down. I also think we could use either Mussina or Pettitte, but not both.

Peavy is no ace but he is much better than a fourth or fifth starter. He will hopefully come in to slot between CC and Peavy. I don't think Peavy is as good as he was in SD but he is far from overrated.
I meant he should slot in between CC and Wang, not Peavy.

Regarding his height, I'm not sure. He's listed at 6'1", but he does look shorter than that on TV.
I think that they would want Jackson,IPK,Igawa (apparently there is some bizzare interest in him) and 2 0r 3 other prospects pehaps Melky or Duncan could be spare parts to sweeten the pot. Personally I think that Ben Sheets could be worth a look. Hows this Rotation
