According to Tony Massarotti of The Boston Globe, the Red Sox have interest in Andy Pettitte. He says they have expressed interest, but have no made an offer yet. He did say "that any contact between the Sox and Pettitte seems preliminary." So this may just indicate that the Red Sox are looking at everybody.
Do you guys think Pettitte would sign with those bums? I actually do, especially if the Yankees don't make him another offer. Brian Cashman did say again yesterday that he wants Pettitte to return to the Yankees, and Mark Feinsand wrote today that "Cashman said he has been exchanging e-mails with Randy Hendricks, who represents Andy Pettitte, but no progress has been made toward bringing the lefthander back." Hopefully something gets done pretty soon.

Greg, I was making the same point as Mike B., but for some reason you jumped on me? If Andy is using the Red Sox to up the ante for the Yanks than he is ungrateful. And the Yanks have made an offer to Andy, of I think around 10 mil, reported on this blog, so I'm not sure what you mean about the Sox being the only interested party. And don't sell me that a guy who has made over 100 million dollars in his career "needs" a job.
And by the way, it has nothing to do with the Red Sox, Petitte using any team to squeeze more money out of the Yanks, who have already made a fair offer, than he is ungrateful. Again, not one of the Yankee veterans ever gives this team a hometown discount. It's a joke.

Yes the Yanks have offered $10 million. And I think it's more like he wants a job, you're right "needs" might not be the right word.
about this yankee discount theory: it is the front office's fault for this never happening. the front office has always prided themselves for "taking care of their own." we consistently overpay for our homegrown players. they take pride in the fact that they are the biggest market, and cash is never an issue. the front office never makes an effort to make it seem like a hometown discount is remotely necessary
Just sign the man for $13 mill. And if he doesn't accept, move on. I can't believe the Yanks are splitting hairs on this one. If he's healthy, Pettite can be a work horse which is what the yanks need in the back-end of their rotation.

Don't use Igawa as an argument. One, out of a dozen poor decisions the Yankees have made in the past five years regarding the rotation, can not be used to justify making another one and overpaying for Petitte. The key is "if" he's healthy. People try to downplay his injury history, but its there, he is aging, and with his stuff dwindling he has lost the ability to pitch inside to righties. His best pitch used to be a nasty cutter now its his curveball which is a second tier pitch at best. I don't think he'll even win 12 games this year, or throw 180 innings, or even be .500. If the Yankees sign him at least it will only be for one year, but the dollar figure is silly.
