Rosenthal: Yanks, Dodgers Talking Trade

UPDATE 4:07 p.m.: Peter Abraham also spoke with Ned Colletti, and Colletti told him that he and the Yankees haven't talked since July.

UPDATE 3:02 p.m.:
According to Ken Gurnick on MLB's Hot Stove Blog the Yankees and Dodgers have not spoke:

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti knocked down a Foxsports.com report that he is "again talking" to the Yankees about acquiring second baseman Robinson Cano, with the Yankees interested in Matt Kemp and pitching.

"It'd be nice to talk first," Colletti said.

These false/wrong reports really make me hate the winter meetings. Expect many more of these "reports" as the week goes on. Consider yourself warned.

From Ken Rosenthal:

As the Dodgers try to resolve their infield, they are again talking to the Yankees about a trade for second baseman Robinson Cano. The teams have resumed their discussions about Cano at the winter meetings, according to one source.

The Dodgers also are interested in Yankees center fielder Melky Cabrera, and the Yankees likely would want outfielder Matt Kemp and pitching in return. The Dodgers' interest in Cabrera is a sign that they might not be confident of Andruw Jones making a strong return in 2009. The Dodgers also need to find a match for Juan Pierre, who has requested a trade.

While I still think Melky can be a solid major leaguer, with Brett Gardner and Austin Jackson in the organization it might be the smart move to trade him. But I still don't like the idea of trading Cano.

I wouldn't trade Cano for Kershaw and Billingsley, the pitchers they're talking about. And Matt Kemp? Can't we do better?

I think all three are going to be very good, Billingsley already is, and Kemp is on his way. But to answer your question, no the Yankees aren't going to get much more for Cano right now than one of these players.

I agree with Greg, I just don't like the idea of trading one of the better 2B prospcts in the game for an OF or young pitcher, we have enough arms and I doubt that we can find another middle IF as talented as Cano. I prefer trading him and others to SD for Peavy.

I don't how much better you think you can get than Kemp. Kemp may struggle with strike/ball recognition but he has loads of power potential, a ton of speed, a great arm, and possesses the ability to hit for a high average. When do you pass up on a 300. hitter with a 30-30 season likely on the horizon. As for pitching, we should grab Kershaw. If all else fails, build yourself up for the future. Joba, Kershaw, and Wang make a fantastic three going forward. We should still pick up CC and another pitcher. This would be a cost effective way to better your team. I like Cano a lot, he possesses many the same tools as Kemp but Kemp has the speed and the defense that Cano does not have.

all 3 have very bright futures. if they were on the yankees, we would be looking at them like they were future hall of famers. on other sites all the dodger fans say they would never trade kemp for cano straight up. in most cases we really dont know enough about the dodgers, so we really shouldnt criticize a possible trade. we just have to sit back and watch how good these guys become, we just really dont know who's better than the other.

matt kemp is another bernie williams, with the potential to have more power

Anon, I agree, I think Kemp is very good and will end up as one of the better CF'ers in the game.

As for Cano's defense I think we're forgetting that he was one of the best defensive second baseman in the sport in '07. Here are Bill James' +/- rankings for that season:

Chase Utley +22
Aaron Hill +22
Orlando Hudson +20
Mark Ellis +19
Robinson Cano +17
Kaz Matsui +12
Brandon Phillips +11
Placido Polanco +10
Mark Grudzielanek+7
Howie Kendrick +7
Ian Kinsler +7

He had a bad year on both sides of the ball last year, but he can definitely have a rebound year both offensively and defensively in '09.

If the Yankees can get Kemp and Kershaw/Billingsley for Cano and Melky they might have to do it, but I doubt they'd be able to get that much in return.

Greg,

I agree with you that I'm not a fan of trading Cano. However, if we could get Kemp and Kershaw/Billingsley, we have to make the deal.

I agree with Anonymous: if it's the deal he mentions above, then I'm for it.

Believe me I like Cano but Kemp is comparable in terms of talent. Lets not act like Kemp is Swiss Cheese. And he's younger then Cano.

Cano & Melky for Kemp & Billingsley is a fair trade for both sides. How it actually works out is another story if the trade happens.

If anything the Yankees have an upper hand. I mentioned Kemp and Cano are comparable talents. Well Billingsley and Melky are not.

The only thing I don't like about trading Cano is there is no internal ML ready replacement.
I could do without signing O.Hudson. Especially what he's asking for.
It would be nice to have some sort of internal option even if it was a SS or 3B prospect that can easily move to 2B.

IMO, cano and melky for kemp and billingsley is not fair, its too good for us. i would love it, but i dont think LA would do that. i think they look at billingsley like we look at hughes.

Greg Cohen said...

I don't think LA would make that trade either Dan.

The Yankees may have to throw in some other highly touted prospects from the lower levels, like Betances or Montero.

As Greg has noted, the Yankees would have to chip in some very good prospects. The price to get one of those 2 good young pitchers might be too high. Cano and Melky have very low trade value given their 2008 seasons. It sucks selling low and buying high.

These reporters are pathetic. How do they print these stories if they're baseless?
