Sox Meet With CC

UPDATE 12:10 a.m.: From Jon Heyman:
The Red Sox are believed to have talked about parameters with Sabathia and perhaps even presented the left-hander with an offer. However, it is believed that Boston is unlikely to top the Yankees' market-setting (or is it market-capping) $140 million, six-year bid and that Epstein probably focused on Sabathia's chances to win with the Red Sox.
UPDATE 10:30 p.m.: Ken Rosenthal has an update on the Sox-CC meeting:
sources familiar with the club's thinking downplayed the Sox's interest, saying general manager Theo Epstein is only doing his "due diligence."

The Sox were described by another source as "warming up in the bullpen" for free-agent right-hander A.J. Burnett, but the team remains focused on signing free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira and opposed to awarding lengthy contracts to starting pitchers.

From Gerry Fraley:

It did not take long for Boston to respond to the New York Yankees' wooing of free-agent left-hander CC Sabathia.

On the same day that the Yankees had their second meeting with Sabathia and his representatives, the Red Sox got together with him. Boston general manager Theo Epstein, manager Terry Francona and pitching coach John Farrell participated in the session.

Most people don't think the Red Sox are major players in the CC sweepstakes, they're probably just covering all their bases. There is also a chance that CC set this meeting up like he did with the Yanks to see how interested the Sox were.

I can't see the Sox offering more than the $140 million the Yankees offered so I wouldn't worry too much about them landing CC. And come on, New York is a heck of a lot nicer than Boston.

There's no way the Sox are in any way interested in paying him $100M or more. They probably are just doing their duty to see what he's looking for, and to see if for some bizarre reason CC would take about $50M less to play for Boston.

Yanks have the cash to get both CC and Sheets. I hope they do. Boston is trying to muddy the waters, typical of that dirty water town.

If CC said no to the yanks, then Yanks could very well (still) get AJ, and Sheets, have Wang, Joba, and would need a 5th out of many candidates in-house. Yanks can also get Manny or Tex, with the CC money freed up. Its not a bad back up plan.
