Yanks Have Ruled Out Going After Ben Sheets

From Kat O'Brien and Ken Davidoff:
They have ruled out going after oft-injured Ben Sheets, someone familiar with their plans said, because of too many "red flags." Instead, they will await a decision from Andy Pettitte.

The Yankees, who had hoped to sign Pettitte or Sheets to round out their starting rotation, have decided that Pettitte would be a better fit. Sheets did make 31 starts in 2008, going 13-9 with a 3.09 ERA for the Brewers, but injuries kept him from topping 160 innings between 2005 and 2007.

Another advantage of signing Pettitte instead of Sheets is that Pettitte will require just a one-year contract.
Also a Yankees official with knowledge of the meeting between Cashman and Pettitte on Thursday said:
"They just had a good meeting and [Pettitte's] thinking about things."
It's probably the much smarter move to go with Pettitte over Sheets in this case. With a rotation that has A.J. Burnett (injury-prone) and Joba Chamberlain (innings limit) in it it's good to have someone who has thrown 200 or more innings in 10 of his 14 major league seasons. They need an innings eater.

It also may have been smarter if the Yankees went with Sheets over Burnett, but that's a conversation for another day.

your right its probably samrter to get pettitte, but sheets is so damn tempting. envisioning him as or number 5 just makes me drool. pettitte as our number 5 is too shabby, but sheets is has so much of a reward if he pans out. either way our pitching, starters and bullpen has become our strength, finally. if only everybody can have rebound years on the offensive side, we could have a special year.

* pettitte isnt too shabby*, other minors mistakes but you know what i meant.

Sheets is tempting, which is why I might have signed him to a two year deal over giving Burnett five.

Regardless of history, I still feel Petitte is more likely to miss significant time due to injury next season, but more importantly he's more likely to be a huge liability in the rotation. If the red flags are too much for the Yanks to overlook I understand, but honestly I'd rather have a guy like Garland in the rotation over an increasingly mediocre Petitte.

I disagree with you about Jon Garland. He would cost about the same and would want a longer deal than Pettitte, and last year he was worse than Pettitte. He had a 4.90 ERA, struck out less, pitched fewer innings, and walked more.

AJ Burnett was a bad bad move. This guy is Carl Pavano waiting to happen! There still is hope...maybe he fails his physical? Would rather have had Lowe or Sheets.

Did Cashman not learn anything?
Kevin Brown, Carl Pavano... Than again, what does he care, its not his money!

Perhaps Cashman did not learn anything from past mistakes. Right now I'm just plain confused a bit, but maybe the Burnett move will pay off.
