Yanks Nearing Deal For Lowe?

From Jon Heyman:
The Yankees' new rotation is starting to take shape as they are also in serious negotiations with free-agent Derek Lowe. An agreement with Lowe appears likely to be finalized in coming days, as well. The sides were discussing a contract for four years and about $66 million late Tuesday.
I hate the idea of signing Lowe, especially to a four year deal.

Why would you lock yourself into a four year deal with a 36 year old pitcher when you can sign another one (Pettitte) for one year instead? This makes absolutely no sense to me.

yeah, just sign sheets for 2 with incentives and pettitte for 1.

Totally agree.

CC, Wang, Sheets, Pettitte, and Joba works for me.

and 6 and 7 would be Hughes and Aceves, or who ever emerges next year.

last two years lowe was in the al east his era was: 4.47 and 5.42. 16-18 mil per year? no thanks

I know, I don't understand their love for Lowe at all.

THat is way too much for LOWE, I"d much rather have give Sheets 2 yrs and Andy 1. I'd also like to see us trade Matsui

This would be a horrible signing. He is a .500 pitcher at best. Sheets and Burnett is the way I would go.

I think it's too risky to sign both Sheets and Burnett with their injury history. They're both very good but I wouldn't want to have that many injury risks in one rotation, especially with Joba and his innings limit.

I'd rather they sign Sheets or Burnett and Pettitte.

I have a feeling were going to sign Sheets as well, and Pettite will have to say his goodbyes. I think George's sons want to usher in a new era and that does not include the great Yankee known as Pettite. Look for a CC, Sheets, Wang, Lowe, and Joba rotation.

I wouldn't be surprised if that ends up being the rotation I just wish they would stop pursuing Lowe.

Does anyone think there is any chance they could just be in this to drive up the price for Boston?

well it looks like pettitte is done here...

Greg,

No. The Phillies seem to be the only other team in the mix and the Yankees have no reason to drive the price up for a team not even in their league. We will be ending up with Lowe.

I want Sheets, not Lowe.

Anon,

Gordon Edes reported earlier today that the Mets and Red Sox are also in talks with Lowe.

There are so many conflicting reports going around I honestly don't know what to think.

Ben Sheets has some of the best stuff in the game. Forget Lowe and forget Burnett, sign Sheets and go from there.
