A Few Yankees Updates From Heyman

Jon Heyman posted an article tonight about the Yankees, here is what he had to say:

- The Yankees are taking trade offers for Xavier Nady and Nick Swisher.

- He doesn't think the Yankees will be able to trade Hideki Matsui. Between the no-trade clause and his recent injuries he thinks it's impossible.

- They will not trade Johnny Damon. He says the believe they need him to leadoff and play centerfield.

Nothing here really surprises me besides the idea that the Yankees want Damon to play center. I don't believe that at all. Also if Damon was going to play center why would they have to trade Nady or Swisher? The outfield would be Nady, Damon, and Swisher, and Matsui would be the DH. Either way, Damon doesn't belong in centerfield. Play him in left where he will actually be a good defensive player.

Man if they really start him in CF, we have a horrible defence! Swisher-better 1b than OF, he openly admitted when we signed him, hes a firstbaseman, and he is glad is isn't playing OF...

Damon and his pigeon arm, and covers less ground each yr, especially with his nagging foot injuries...

Nady, decent RF, with lil range, B arm... He goes back to the wall better than Abreu, but he lacks the abrue Arm...

Im not sure what the best move is, keep all of them, and have a stronge bench, or trade some, and use some young guys... Use gardner, have him steal, use melky he is having a gr8 winter league...

I don't like the idea of moving Nady or Swisher. If I were the Yanks I would only entertain trade proposals for Matsui. Since most seem to think that is not going to happen, then I feel the Yanks should go into the season with what they have and sort it out next offseason, after the World Series euphoria wears off, when Damon and Matsui's contracts are up. That way, they have salary flexibility and they can make a serious play for a legit centerfielder, and at the same time give A-Jax a real shot. Just out of curiosity Greg, what are the Yankees hoping to bring back with a potential Swisher/Nady deal? A back end rotation guy? An outfielder? This kind of talk makes little sense for the Yanks in my opinion.

Heyman actually described Damon as "part of a center field rotation..." NOT as the everyday CF...It wouldn't surprise me to see him there in some of those NL IL games...

I read the Nats approached Cashman about one of Nady/Swisher but were turned down...I too wonder what we are expecting in return...

what about a young catcher because jorge is not getting any younger.

We have Jesus Montero, but there's a good chance he'll have to change position (big kid, not great behind the dish) and he still probably needs 2 more years in the minors before we see him in the bigs. Cervelli isn't much of a hitter but is a great defensive catcher. Romine projects to be a decent all around catcher, but is also just a baby and doesn't have the huge upside like Montero.

In terms of what we could get for Nady, I'd be more interested in a young short stop with a good glove. Realisically, I think there's a decent chance we see Jeter in the outfield at some point in 2010. Considering what we gave up for Nady, I'd like to get 2 or 3 prospects in return.

I believe Posada can catch for 2 more years. Then we can make a run for Mauer for 2011. Posada can DH his last year of the contract. I also think Cervelli's hitting is underrated. I mean he doesn't have any pop, but I can see him posting a .280 avg with a .350 OBP in the majors.

I don't see Nady or Swisher bringing back a stud catching prospect...

I'm thinking more like a back-end starter or a reliever, and maybe some middling prospects...

If it's Nady we should sell high while we can...

You all are idiots. Matsui isn't going anywhere, he is the most consistent hitter on the team. He is the reason AROD had the MVP year in 07, and when he's healthy, he's still one of the most dangerous hitters.

Damon is still a great player (and an above average Left Fielder) who carried the Yankees for great stretches during the 08 Season. He also never was on the DL until 2008.

And Nady is a great hitter and fielder who the Yankees obvously have great expectatoins for due to what they gave up. He is still young, and still cheap.

I guess you all are still trying to cope with the fact that you don't need an ALL STAR team to win the world series. You can have some non-household names playing for you, or some guys who aren't all A's in MLB 2k8

A-Rod is the reason A-Rod had that great 2007 season.

Matsui's a good hitter, but not one of the most dangerous in the game...

Nady's a great hitter? Have you seen what he's hit for his career? .280 avg with a .335 OBP? And people like him because of the way that he produced with the Yankees, which was a .268 avg and .320 OBP... He's the only guy I'd be looking to trade if the right deal comes along, unless someone offers something that makes sense for the other guys.

Matsui is dangerous becuase he is the most consistent. People are quick to sell Matsui before they realize how different this ballclub would be without him. If he didn't hit behind AROD, you think he would of put up those 2007 Numbers? You're out of your mind if you think he would have.

Nady is only 30 years old, and while he does only have a 280 career average, it has been improving every year 2006- 280, 2007- 278, 2008- 305... If he wasn't something special, we wouldn't have traded Tabata and others for him. Once again, you don't need the highest best player in the majors at each posistion on your team. You can win with average and above average, and Nady falls into above average. Factor that in with his cheap salary and young age, and you are getting a great return for your investment.

I bet you think we should get Manny and go get Matt Hallady next year. While were at it, why don't we buy the Marlins and use them for talent development, I hear they're hurting for money.

Yankee Rebel,

That's true, he did say in the center field rotation, but still, it's not something the Yanks should do. Keep him in left.

During interleague, as you mentioned, is the only time he should sniff center, but that's still only a few games. I wouldn't consider that in "the CF rotation."

Giambi(if healthy) and Posada could have hit behind A-Rod in '07 and he still would have had the year he had, if not better.

Nady is not someone 'special'.

How is going from .280 to .278 improving every year. I understand it's a small thing, but at least know what you're saying.

Nady's salary won't be cheap when he signs his new contract.

If Holliday was productive in Oakland, and the contract he was looking was for was indicative of his production, then why wouldn't I look to sign him. They have 3 players hitting Free Agency, so why not replace them with someone who is younger and better... I'm not being wreckless with wanting to obtain the best players, I'm just being smart.

When you come up with a good argument let me know.

ok well 1st of all i am a diehard yankee fan and i still feel that we arent a 100 percent lock to make it past the 1st round of the playoffs. my reason being is that after our 1 through 4 hitters the rest of our lineup is a mystery... are jorge posada, matsui, cano and nick swisher all going to have comeback years? thats pretty much impossible to bet on that, i can only truly see jorge and cano having comeback seasons and i give matsui and nick swisher a 50/50 shot each. i do not like johnny damon leading off anymore he cant get onbase like he use to. i say see how well gardner does in the spring nd if he does well lead him off, hes faster, younger and can steal plenty more bases and has a wayyyyy better arm then damon in center. keep nady in right, put swisher in left and switch matsui and damon every once in a while in the dh spot. oh, and keep joba in the rotation as our #3 or 4 depending on wang. let marte, bruney, phil coke, eduardo ramirez, and dave robertson help setup for mo. besides these little things i think the team is set nd can go all the way withh what we have
