Melky To Skip WBC

From Pete Caldera:
Melky Cabrera will now skip the WBC, and concentrate on winning the center field job over Brett Gardner. It was obviously a good choice by Cabrera, who stood to lose much by just being out of the manager's sight for a few valuable weeks.
I know there are a lot of fans who enjoy the WBC, but as I said before, the less Yankees the better.

Good for Melky. I hope Gardner wins the spot, but I've always loved Melk.

I like Melky too, I wouldn't be that surprised if he's starting on opening day.

Damon will start opening day in center with Swisher and Nady in right and left. Gardner and Melky will be on the bench as late inning defensive replacements and pinch-runners. Unless the Yanks trade Swisher or Nady, I don't see Melky or Gardner playing more than 50+ games this season...They are AAA players on too good of a team to be impact players. They are nice pieces to the puzzle, but not as everyday players.

Smart move, put in that extra time under the watch of the skip. I think Winter Ball was enough of a prep course for him as far as the upcoming season is concerned.

Is Cano still in it?

As of now he is Miller.

Anon,

I don't think so, if the Yankees care about defense at all they'll stick with Damon in left and start Gardner or Melky in center.

I think we should give Gardner more of a shot to prove what he is before we decide he's just a AAA player after 100 at-bats in the majors.
