Swisher Injecting Life Into Yankee Clubhouse

From Mike Vaccaro:

It was a good day to be Nick Swisher, because it has become apparent that just about every day is a good day to be Nick Swisher, who has quickly injected more life, more looseness, more workaday energy than just about anyone we've seen in this clubhouse in a good long while.

It was by Swisher's locker, half an hour before taking the field, when heavy metal began to blare out of an iPod dock, Swisher providing a helpful mix of air drums, air guitar and backup vocals.

"Me, I'd play country, that's more my music," he said, laughing. "But it's hard to get country music into the clubhouse."

There have been other free spirits who've migrated to the Yankees in recent years, from Jason Giambi to Damon, and as much as both injected some denim into the Yankees' button-down culture, nobody has done what Swisher has done, which may be the most refreshing thing of all: reminding everyone that, yes, this is serious business.

But, yes, it's a game, too. And games are supposed to be fun.

"We're playing baseball, and we're playing baseball for the New York Yankees," Swisher said. "Seriously, what could be better than that?"

He's versatile, he's under contract for three years, and he's the life of the party. Don't trade him Cashman.

Not only will he help the Yankees on the field, but off the field as well. People shouldn't underestimate how important good clubhouse guys are for a team.

Good point Greg. And ya know what? If we could look into a crystal ball and see that Swisher is going to have a bounce-back year, I would give him the starting job.

I know Girardi likes him, so even if he doesn't start everyday he will get a good number of at-bats.

With Griffey out of the picture, Atlanta will eventually come around on Nady. If Swisher's playing well, and everyone stays healthy, I'd expect a deal by the middle of May.

I was reading the Journal News this morning and after an article on Jason Johnson one of the post scripts said that Nady is most likely the starting right fielder but "Swisher is still a strong candidate".

Here's some more about Swisher from Pete Caldera's blog:

"Swisher also kept Kevin Long after hours in the cage yesterday, and at one point shouted giddily, 'Nobody else is working like this!'"

jmas12,

Like Greg, I really don't think they (the Yankees) need to make a trade. Their bench right now has the depth of the ones they had in their recent dynasty. (and they were great)

They don't realy need to trade him. You can have Nady play one day and Swisher the other day.

Swisher is the man.

Braves sign Garret Anderson. That's great news for Swish.

I'm just not a big Nady fan. If Nady is fine sitting on the bench and getting ABs where he can then fine. But I think that Swisher is more valuable for this team. Takes more pitches, takes more walks, switch hitter, better defensive range... I just don't think of Swisher as that role player. I think he's a guy you want out there every day. And being that he's coming up on free agency, I don't think that Nady would be too excited about sitting on the bench.

Think they could have used another word than 'injecting' with all this b.s. going on haha
