Had to stop in to ask about this one...
Pete Abe stated "Francisco Cervelli is leaving camp to play for Italy in the WBC. Yes, he’s Venezuelan. But under WBC rules you can play for any country you can point to on a globe."
Is this yet another poor joke by the fatman or is this true, and if so, how is this possible? I want answers but I only look for them from you. Pete annoys me. Haha.
Oh! And in regards to my idea of a "Leadership Council"..
Id go with Those with Rings, included, to cover the bases, Infield(Jeter), Outfield(Damon), General All-Encompassing(Posada), Relief(Mariano)and Starting Pitchers(Pettitte). And Id even throw in Joba as an omsbudsman of sorts for the younger players to have someone to reach out to without fear of being shouted down.
There may be better candidates than Joba for that, but if youre gonna appoint anyone, might as well be the ONLY young guy you KNOW isnt going anywhere.
I believe Bernie has yet to retire.

As for Abraham's comments, I think it's a joke. I believe Cervelli has dual citizenship.
He should retire. With his age and the time he's been out of baseball, no team would want him. But i'm still glad he still wants to play and wants to be in the WBC.
Bernie can bust some doors open here with this move.
Professionals that reach the final level of their game and may not be suited to satisfy a major league roster, yet are too proud to take a minor league deal, can now have some serious level of competition to look forward to... if they happen to be citizens or natives of a country besides the U.S. that is...
(Currently thinking of a past athlete or future retiree that could well fit this example, Ill get back to you, lol)
