Yanks Sign Tomko

Chad Jennings is reporting that the Yankees have signed veteran right-hander Brett Tomko to a minor league deal.

The soon to be 36-year-old went 2-7 with a 6.30 ERA in 22 games for Kansas City and San Diego in 2008. And for his career he's 95-99 with a 4.68 ERA.

To be honest, I have no idea.

Flyer/insurance. Worst case scenario for the Yankees, and he's 2009's Ponson. There are clearly several other guys ahead of him on the depth chart (Hughes and Aceves to start with), but it can't hurt to have another veteran around.

It's a long shot that he'll ever see an ML inning, but there's no risk, only minimal cash.

If you needed someone to make a spot start, it's as good of an option as Igawa or the like.

Because Cashman has a "thing" for old washed up pitchers. Tomko is this years Scott Erickson.
