I think with the way Robertson has pitched this spring that if he keeps this up that he should be a lock to make the pen. Also, this is just a guess but I think Melancon is gonna pitch at some point in tomorrows game. If he keeps pitching the way he has this spring that the Yankees should see that he needs no more time in the minors. I would love it if on opening day if both Robertson and Melancon are in the bullpen. It would be unfair if Edwar make the team because he has not pitched yet and probably won't for another week. By the time he gets in a game both Melancon and Robertson will prove to be more deserving then Edwar and that the way it should be.
Yeah, but Edwar has nearly two years of major league experience whereas Robertson has 30 IP and Melancon is not even on the 40-man roster.
Now that doesn't mean I'd prefer Edwar - because I don't and have never thought much of him - but the experience factor as well as his bugs bunny change is what gives him an edge over the other two.
Edwar is the only one of the group who has that change in their repertoire and Girardi loves that kind of contrast with his hard throwers.
If I were a betting man, I'd say the bullpen will open with these seven arms: Mo, Bruney, Marte, Edwar, Veras, Coke, and Giese.
I'd love to see Robertson or Melancon get the nod over Edwar - I just don't think it will happen.
Coke is only a "half long man" according to Girardi the other day, so it appears one of Giese/Tomko/Aceves will make the club as the primary long man.
I expect Melancon to start the season in Scranton and probably force his way to the Bronx by May or June.
We also have to keep in mind that a couple of these bullpen arms could be used as part of a package for a third baseman because it appears more likely than not that A-Rod will be having surgery soon.
BTW, yes Melancon throws a change as well but it's not his primary out-pitch.
Edwar basically just throws his BP fastball and that change.
