After his rough outing last Wednesday CC Sabathia spent some time working on some things in the bullpen with Dave Eiland. According to Bryan Hoch, he was focused on shortening his stride to make sure he threw the ball on more of a downhill plane. Well, it looks like it paid off. In four innings tonight Sabathia allowed a run on one hit and walk, and struck out seven. He threw 59 pitches on the day, 40 of them for strikes.
Mariano Rivera made his first appearance since having offseason shoulder surgery. He was himself, retiring the side in order on 11 pitches, and striking out two along the way. His velocity was in the low 90's and his pitches had very good movement.
Edwar Ramirez pitched 1-2-3 inning with one strikeout.
And Alfredo Aceves finished off the final three innings of the game, allowing a run on four hits, walking one, and striking out two.
The Yankees offense beat up Pirates pitching for 9 runs on 13 hits. Hideki Matsui led the way for the Yanks, going 2-for-2 with a double, homer, and four RBI. Xavier Nady was the only other Yankee to have a multi-hit night, he went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Jorge Posada, who was behind the plate for five innings tonight, went 1-for-3 with two RBI, a walk, and a run scored.
Melky Cabrera, Ramiro Pena, and Robinson Cano each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Yanks head to Kissimmee to take on the Astros tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Chien-Ming Wang will start for the Yankees, and yes he will have to bat, against the Astros. Don't worry, I don't think he'll be doing any base running. Mike Hampton will start for the Astros.
2 Comments:
Who knows, maybe the Wanger will hit a homer and then he can walk all the way back to homeplate.
I hope he stares at three strikes and walks back to the dugout.
