According to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes, Alex Rodriguez's brother, Joe RodrÃguez, is saying that A-Rod may need surgery on his hip and could be out 10 weeks.
Joe also said that "Alex is destroyed."
The Yankees have not commented on the report.
It's also worth noting that this report comes from Enrique Rojas who was a little premature with his reporting of the Manny Ramirez signing the other day. He had reported the deal was done, hours before it actually was done.
Here's an update from Peter Abraham:
UPDATE, 11:16 a.m.: Joe Girardi just claimed he didn’t know anything about Alex. That’s a sure sign of bad news.
The Yankees PR dept. is also in shutdown mode, another bad sign.

Makes one wonder whether repeated steroid injections in the rump can cause cysts on the hip?
at least its early. Who plays 3B? Ransom? Berroa?
when they remove the cyst, might as well remove the brain, ( he doesn't use it) & sew his mouth shut, he can eat thru a straw...how else can he screw us next?
how else can he screw us next?
This takes the cake as most absurd words ever uttered. Get over yourself. A baseball team, and a player owe you nothing.
Eric,
A reader emailed me about the same thing. They said something similar happened to Giambi, but I can't remember if that was the case.
Either way, I think there is a good chance that this could have been caused by repeated injections.
This is JASON GIAMBI all over again. Cysts happen when people go off the steroids and this is absolutely, in my mind, from AROD quitting the roids in February when he found out about the leak. His body may totally break down. He may never be the same. Remember, Giambi went from a .300, 35HR, 100RBI guy to a .225 hitter with 15 homers.
get over myself, myself, who are you? your talking about someone who has the BIGGEST EGO in sports... you must be a republican..
Let me re-write one thing above. Its from him quitting an undetectable HGH type substance. I believe he quit the roids in 2003. Now he is on the "good" stuff. What a bum. Can SWISHER PLAY 3B????
Imagine having Barry Bonds on the Yankees after the roid stuff came out. Now imagine being stuck with him for 8 more f-ing years! This sucks. I hope the Yankees sue him for defamation, refuse to pay his contract and yes, anon, put Swisher at 3B! We have enough offense. PS: How about Arod using his ex-wife and little kids to help his image. This guy is so shameless, I wouldn't put anything past him.
Dude it says that he had the hip problem since last year... So the theory of this happening because he stoped juicing is obserd... Get over yourselves What do you mean "how can he screw us next?" You think he wanted to have a cyst on purpose to screw over the Yankees? Wow... Thats all anyone can say to that is WOW!
my cousin has officially hit ROCK BOTTOM
Move Nady to third I believe he player some third in San Diego. Put Swisher in right.
could you just imagine if baseball contract were like NFL 1's, if the ownerw were smart,( & they aren't) the players union is too strong, & Selig & Fehr need to be removed, & baseball needs there antitrust laws revovked...
I think this means one thing; Ransom and Berroa will both make the opening day roster, and whichever one is playing better will start at 3rd.
Greg,
Your killing me with that last comment. Berroa or Ransom?? Can we please at least make certain that we get Nady, Swisher, Matsui and Damon all in the line-up. This is our chance. We have a month of Spring training left. Time to give Nady or Swisher 15 games at 3B.
There is a part of me that is VERY HAPPY that the Yankees will open their new stadium without AROD there. It will be nice to be focussed on the Yanks, the new stadium, and not have him as a distraction. Cashman must be shaking his head right now. When this jerk opted out during the World Series and Cashman said "let him go," I wish somebody had listened.
Peter, they have no choice. Nady has played third base a grand total of three times in his career, and that was back in '05. And Swisher has never played there.
The only other option is signing a free agent. But there isn't much out there. Maybe a guy like Ray Durham, Mark Grudzielanek (He's still a free agent, right?) or something like that.
Some fairly uneducated Yankee fans on this blog.
One accused me of being a republican because he thinks a ballplayer planned to have a cyst and be out 6 weeks.
Another one wants to move Nick Swisher who throws left-handed to third base.
And the author is looking to make a free agent move, when most reports have Arod missing April only.
This is what happens to baseball teams. Let Ransom or Berroa play while Arod heals, and let these guys rally around one another.
Its funny how most Arod haters think the team would be better off without him, but are stricken with panic when he goes out with injury.
This is not Arod's fault. And for all intents and purposes it seems he played through it most if not all of last year. We should be thankful, as fellow human beings that the growth isn't something more serious like a cancerous lump. Arod is the only player greeted with venom rather than sympathy and well wishes, by his home fans when he is injured.
"And the author is looking to make a free agent move, when most reports have Arod missing April only."
No I'm not. I said that besides using Ransom or Berroa - which is what I think they should and will do - the only other option would be to sign a free agent.
Greg,
I would agree, that in the middle of the season, you don't move Nady to 3B, but its Spring Training. Perfect time to have him play 3B for the next couple of weeks. Baseball America, when Nady was in College, wrote, "He is the best 3B prospect in America."
2 other guys via trade, Mark Teahen and Bill Hall... acouple of options
If his career is over because of this hip thing the good news is the org will be relieved from that atrocious contract.
I guess I'm 1 of the uneducated Yanks fans on here, mr. anonymous, please how can you defend this ego maniac. From opting out DURING the WS, he flat out doesn't respect the game or anyone around him, everytime he opens his mouth, he sticks his foot in it, who are you, another 1 of his "COUSINS". Please defend him, while he pauses for affect during the most lame press conference where he admitted to cheating, "he thinks". You sign 2 monster contracts, it comes with the territory, I cried the day we traded for him & almost broke my tv the day we resigned him, we won 4 TITLES w/o him, with hard nosed, REAL people.... please defend him
I don't know if I read this wrong but on "Scott Proctor's Arm" (it's on Greg's blogroll) it says A-Rod will miss more than 10 weeks.
although I don't like him as a person, we need him, and you guys know it.
9 more years of this soap opera....
Just read from mlbtraderumors.com that A-Rod is out for 4 months.
yeah that's what I meant 4 months. So much for the Yankees season.
I just love how Cashman & the Yankees are ALWAYS last to know everything that involves AROD's indiscretions. Some people just can't get away from that black cloud, in his messed up world, he can't live without chaos all around him.... maybe a trip to DR. Phil, LOL
We need Scottie Brosuis. Get him out of retirement now.
"SURGERY HUGE PRICE TO PAY" a very nice article from Joel Sherman @ the NYPost.com this uneducated fan seems to agree with the strait forward article. Ole Joel hit the nail on the head. Mr. Anonymous needs to read it...
