A-Rod To Undergo Arthroscopic Surgery, Out 6-9 Weeks

From Pete Caldera:
Alex Rodriguez will undergo an arthroscopic surgery to partly repair the torn labrum in his right hip tomorrow morning, with the hope of returning to play for the Yankees within six weeks to nine weeks.

This was a fourth option, GM Brian Cashman and Dr. Marc Philippon said today on a conference call with writers in Tampa.

"I feel it’s in his best interest to have his labrum repaired, remove part of his impingement at the same time," Dr. Philippon said. The cyst he had drained on Wednesday will also be re-drained.

"The goal here is to stabilize Alex’s labrum, to allow him to have more freedom of movement in his hip,'' Dr. Philippon said. " I firmly believe that this approach will be successful.''

..

"Alex made the decision,'' Dr. Philippon said from Vail. This option was a compromise between full surgery — which could have cost A-Rod up to four months — and a program of rest and exercise.

I could have sworn this was the third option, but I guess this is different than the surgery that was mentioned here yesterday.

I think this was the best decision for the Yankees and A-Rod. Now he will only miss 2-4 weeks of the regular season, much like we originally thought the first time we heard about his hip problem.

The article also says that he will have the surgery in Colorado, and will have to have further surgery at the end of the season to fully repair the injury.

And Kat O'Brien is reporting that the surgery will take place on Monday.

THANK GOD! Like I said in the comments section in the post below, we can live with Cody Ransom manning 3rd for 2-4 weeks.

If Teixeira starts off hot, and Ransom does okay, A-Rod could return in May with the Yanks in first place.

(not that it realy matters, it would be only 30 games into the season)

so the original story was right, Arod out until May... thank God. I think he will win some points with the fans deciding to this surgery and waiting for the full surgery.

we didnt have Arod last year for about 3-4 weeks, and this year we have Tex, CC, Burnett.. thinks look like they're going to be fine. thank god.

Silver lining in this - b/c otherwise it is very bad for the Yanks offense this year: 1) steroid talk evaporates at beginning of year, and I would bet is significantly lessened after A-Rod's return; 2) Fans finally appreciate how important A-Rod is to this line-up.

My hope, then, assuming A-Rod can regain his former greatness, is that this is a hard beginning to a great reminder to his career and realationship with the fans. Unrealistic? Perhaps. But I prefer the optimistic route at this point.

Nothing wrong with being optimistic Eric.

I'll say one thing, though. I hope this doesn't make fans appreciate how important he is to the lineup because for that to happen they'll have to struggle while he's gone, and I hope that doesn't happen.
