News & Notes

- Here's an update on A-Rod: Cashman said that he began throwing the ball yesterday. He also said that the Yankees expect him back in Tampa by mid-April, probably the 13-15 because that's when the Yankees will be in Tampa to play the Rays. And A-Rod is still in line to return to the lineup on May 15th.

- Kevin Cash was reassigned to minor-league camp.

- As I posted earlier, it was announced today that Jonathan Albaladejo will make the Opening Day roster. So here's your 2009 Opening Day pitching staff:

STARTERS:
C.C. Sabathia
Chien-Ming Wang
A.J. Burnett
Andy Pettitte
Joba Chamberlain

BULLPEN:
Phil Coke
Damaso Marte
Jonathan Albaladejo
Edwar Ramirez
Jose Veras
Brian Bruney
Mariano Rivera

The only spot on the team that remains up for grabs is the utility spot, so it's a big day for Angel Berroa and Ramiro Pena.

- Former Yankee Gary Sheffield was released by the Tigers today. He was hitting just .178 in 18 spring training games this year. He's sitting on 499 home runs right now, one shy of becoming the 25th member of the 500 Home Run Club.

Think he's pissed?

UPDATE 12:32 p.m.: Here's a quote from Sheffield: "It's one of those things where you move on, you know?... I was surprised. I thought I was getting ready for the season. I never thought that I wasn't going to be playing with the Detroit Tigers this year. It's probably a blessing."

UPDATE 2:38 p.m.: Nady just got hit on the elbow by a pitch and was taken out of the game. Hopefully it's not too bad.

Meanwhile, it's 3-0 Yanks in the top of the sixth. Joba is pitching well: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. He's thrown 67 pitches, 44 for strikes.

UPDATE 3:09 p.m.: The Yankees made it 4-0 with a Melky Cabrera sac fly in the 6th.

After cruising through the first five Joba got knocked around a bit in the sixth. He he allowed two runs on two hits and two walks. His final line was 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K... George King has already writing his "See, this is why Joba should be in the bullpen" article as you read this. ... He once again threw too many pitches, needing 83 to get through just 5.1 innings.

The Yankees added two more in the top of the sixth and now it's 6-2 Yanks.

Stick around and discuss the game
as it happens in the comments section.

captain greg,
u know gary's p.o'd about that!
poor guy, and i used to look up to him too! lol

Greg Cohen said...

I used to like Sheff too, for the most part he was a good Yankee. I wonder who will sign him.

Bentton said...

he should come down this way and sign with the nationals. i wouldn't mind seeing him in a nats uniform

Greg Cohen said...

Apparently he's already said he could play the field, and would be willing to go back to the NL. So you never know.

Peter F. said...

Mets need an OF. They might take a shot at Sheff.

Greg Cohen said...

That's actually a good idea for the Mets.

Is anyone else listening to the Cincinnati broadcast?

Yeah that's what I was going to say. These guys make Sterling and Waldman sound like top notch announcers.

I believe he's thrown 45 pitches.

1-2-3 5th for Joba:

5.0IP, 3H, 0R, 0ER, 1BB, 5SO

Greg Cohen said...

Nady just got hit on the elbow by a pitch and was taken out of the game. Hopefully it's not too bad.

anonyMOOSE said...

Ugh. It's most likely just precautionary. Even if he has to miss a little time, at least we have Swisher who might even be better than Nady.

Anonymous said...

83 pitches in 5.1 IP? Might need that long reliever after all.

Anonymous said...

I think people forget how young Joba is..He's going to fail as he gets used to his role as a starter. However he has a lot of great people to go to for advice and guidance and will eventually emerge as an ace quality pitcher.

Anonymous said...

Joba pitched really well through 5 looks like he tired in the 6th inning which is expected in spring training.

But anyway due to Joba innings limit the yankees are dumb not taking a long man.

Anonymous said...

From Peter Abraham blog

Spoke to a scout who was in the stands today and he had Joba consistently around 94-96.

Good now King and all the other writers can stop writing about his velocity.
