It was an audition for the long reliever role today for the Yankees as they defeated the Brave 6-4. Brett Tomko started for the Yanks and had another good outing. In three scoreless innings, Tomko allowed three hits and a walk, and struck out one. Alfredo Aceves was next. He also pitched three innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk, and struck out one. It was then Dan Giese's turn, in 2.1 innings he allowed a run on three hits and two walks, and struck out three.

Tomko appeared to be the clear favorite before the game, his performance in the game should have pretty much sealed the deal. That is, if they end up having a long reliever on the roster at all. Joe Girardi said today that it was "possible" they wouldn't, and also had a lot of praise for Jonathan Albaladejo.

Back to the game. Edwar Ramirez also pitched, and retired the two batters he faced, one on a strikeout.

Mark Teixeira had a big game, he went 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, and blasted his second homer of the spring. Robinson Cano also hit a solo homered on the day.

Both Xavier Nady and Melky Cabrera went 3-for-4 on the dya. Nady also had an RBI and Melky scored a run. I still think Brett Gardner will be the Yankees starting center fielder when the season begins in 8 days, but Melky has at least started to make things interesting. Here are their stats as of right now:

Gardner: 49 AB, .367/.436/.673, 3 HR, 2 2B, 2 3B, 6 RBI, 9 R, 5 SB

Cabrera: 52 AB, .346/.424/.500, 1 HR, 3 2B, 1 3B, 9 RBI, 10 R, 2 SB

It's a heck of a lot closer than it was a week ago.

Derek Jeter was held hitless, but picked up an RBI and scored a run. He also left the game in the fourth inning with a bruised knuckle on his left pinky. He's listed as day-to-day. Girardi said he expects him to play tomorrow.

While the Yankees were beating the Braves Lake Buena Vista, Chien-Ming Wang was pitching for Triple-A Scranton down in Tampa and had a rough outing. Wang allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk in five innings of work. He also allowed two homers. He threw 92 pitches on the day and is lined up to start the 4/3 exibition against the Cubs at the new stadium.

Jorge Posada and Nick Swisher were also in the Scranton lineup. Posada went 1-for-4 with a double, caught four innings, and threw out a runner trying to steal. And Swisher went 1-for-5 with a home run.

Hideki Matsui and Brian Bruney played in a Double-A game. Matsui went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and a walk. Bruney pitched two hitless inning, and struck out four.

Gardner spring has been much more consistent. He has maintained those numbers throughout the entire spring. Melky has been hitting really well within the last week, but overall Gardner had the much better spring.

Anyway I lost interest in watching spring training games, the season cant come soon enough.

I agree on both counts.

And just to be clear, I'm not trying to say Melky is going to get the starting job.

Also I was a little disappointed with David Robertson getting sent down. Girardi didn't even use him for a week. It seemed like Robertson was getting sent down no matter what. He pitched great during the spring. And he pitch very well last year until Pudge started catching him.

Personally I think Robertson is better than Edwar Ramriez and Albaladejo.

I don't understand why its Albaladejo that has to fight for that last spot over a long man. He should make the team over that waste of a bullpen spot in Edwar Ramirez. Albaladejo has been great all spring long and also been healthy. If anything it should Edwar competing against the long relievers for that spot. He missed half of spring training with an injury that he had since last year and didn't tell the team until this year when he had all offseason to do so. And don't give me this "he was on the team year" garbage because if not for Albaladejo's injury last year he would have been on the team all year long with the way he was pitching not Edwar. Plus, Edwar is so over rated by all yankee fans. He has been over rated since he made his debut and struck out the side in the ninth versus the twins. Lets not forget the score was 8-0. Anyone can do that when the score is 8-0. He has never been that good since. He is one of those guys that looks good when he is in a good bullpen. You are easy able to hide the fact that he is not that good. Just watch by mid-may/early-june, Edwar will have blown 3 games and have a five era and Melancon will be lighting Triple A. Cashman will not wait as long he did to pull the trigger like he did with Hawkins last years. For as much as Girardi loves Edwar (for some unknown reason), Edwars spot in the pen can be had because still has minor league options. He has the next Latroy Hawkins written all over him and will not make it to the all-star break with this team.

While I agree that Albaladejo probably deserves a spot over a guy like Ramirez, I don't think Ramirez is as bad as you're making him out to be.

Either way, the Yankees really like him, and they want to keep him around. However, if he doesn't pitch well they won't hesitate to send him down and call someone else up.
