The Yankees hit four home runs as they blew out the world champion Phillies 10-2. Hideki Matsui got the Yankees started with a two-run homer in the first. Cody Ransom blasted a solo shot in the 4th. Nick Swisher added a solo homer in the 8th. And Melky Cabrera hit a two-run shot, also in the 8th. Cabrera was the star of the game, going 2-for-4 with a homer, 3 RBI, and a run scored.

Derek Jeter, in his first game in the lead off spot, also picked up two hits, going 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, and two runs scored.

Joba Chamberlain started for the Yanks; he went 4.1 innings and allowed two runs on three hits, walked three and struck out two. He obviously did not have his best command, and it took him 76 pitches to get one out into the 5th.

His velocity was pretty good, according to several of the beat writers he topped out at about 94-95 MPH today. And according to Joe Girardi, is right around where he should be. "This is pretty much what we saw last year," the manager said. "As a starter, usually you're not going to have the same velocity as you do one inning coming out of the bullpen. You might get up there, but it's a little bit harder to stay up there. We just continue to build arm strength with him."

The two runs he allowed both came in the first inning, and were both solo home runs, back-to-back blasts from Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.

The bullpen was very good today. Phil Coke, Edwar Ramirez, Brian Bruney, Jose Veras, and Jonathan Albaladejo combined to pitch 4.2 scoreless, allowing just three hits and striking out five.
