4/12 Minor League Report

He won't be doing these all the time by when he does I will

(AAA) Scranton-Wilkes Barre (4-0) beat Lehigh Valley 14-4: Box Score - Recap

The SWB AAA Yanks completed a 4 game sweep at Lehigh Valley by a score of 14-4.

PITCHING: Phil Hughes made his first start of the 09 season. Hughes struggled a bit with his control in the 1st inning, walking the first 2 batters he faced. He got out of the jam with a K on a beautiful curve, a foul pop to 1st, and a K on a cut fastball. 30 pitches - 17 strikes.

2nd inning: Hughes gave up a leadoff single on a curve, K on a fastball, flyout to center and groundout to 2nd. 12 pitches--8 strikes.

3rd inning: Hughes got 2 quick out before giving up a double to deep center. He got the final out on a popup to 1st. 9 pitches--9 strikes.

4th inning: 1 run on a double and sac fly to make it 5-1. Hughes also gave up a 2 out triple but got a K for the final out. 15 pitches-11 strikes.

5th inning: 2 runs off 2 solo homers make the score 6-3. Hughes added a strikeout. 18 pitches--10 strikes.

6h inning: Hughes only clean inning of the game. He added a strikeout, his 6th of the game. 12 pitches -- 8 strikes.

Hughes Line: 6.0 IP, 3 runs, 6 hits, (2 homers) 6 K--2 walks, ERA 4.50
96 pitches--63 strikes--33 balls. 4 groundouts - 8 flyouts. Win (1-0)

BULLPEN: Steven Jackson pitched a scoreless 7th. Jackson gave up a run in the 8th on a double, walk and an RBI single. The run was the 1st of the year given up by the SWB bullpen in about 16 innings.

Mark Melancon replaced Jackson in the 8th inning with 2 men on base and 1 out. Melancon got 2 strikeouts for the final 2 outs of the 8th. Melancon threw a perfect 9th adding 2 more strikeouts. In his 2 games Melancon has 3.2 IP, 0 hits, 7 K's, 0 walks.

OFFENSE: SWB scored 4 runs in the 3rd inning to take a 4-0 lead. Singles by Eric Duncan, Doug Bernier, and Kevin Cash loaded the bases with no outs. The runs scored on an error, Angel Berroa drove in a run when he was hit by a pitch, Todd Linden drove in another with an RBI groundout, and Justin Leone hit a sac fly.

The Yanks scored a solo run in the 4th to make it 5-0. Bernier singled, Kevin Cash doubled, and Kevin Russo drove in a run with a groundout. SWB picked up another run in the 5th to make it 6-1. Justin Leone reached on an error, Juan Miranda singled, and Austin Jackson smacked an RBI single.

In the 6th inning, Cash hit a solo homer to make the score SWB 7-3. SWB added 2 more runs in the 7th to make it 9-3. Cash had a bases loaded walk, Russo hit an RBI groundout. The horrendous LHV bullpen gave up 5 more runs in the 9th on 5 walks and 2 hits to make the score 14-4.

Kevin Cash had 3 hits including a homer and 2 rbi walks with the bases loaded.

Juan Miranda singled three times and drove in 2 to give him 11 RBI in 4 games.

Austin Jackson had an RBI, 2 singles, and 2 walks.

Eric Duncan, Doug Bernier and Kevin Russo each added 2 singles.

NOTES: Eric Duncan made his first pro appearance in the outfield. Shelley Duncan missed his 2nd game with a sore neck. Kei Igawa makes his first start of the year as SWB moves on to Buffalo Monday.

Clearly Eric Duncan is a bust. He's been in AAA forever and still hasn't hit all that well.
