4/13 Minor League Report

(AAA) Scranton-Wilkes Barre (5-0) beat Buffalo 6-5: Box Score - Recap

The SWB Yanks traveled to Buffalo and defeated the Bisons by a score of 6-5 to push their record to 5-0 on the young season. The 5-0 start is the best in the 21 year SWB franchise history.

PITCHING: Kei Igawa made his first start of the 09 season. Igawa led SWB last year in wins with a 14-8 record. Igawa threw a perfect 1st inning picking up a strikeout. In the 2nd inning, Bobby Kielty hit a solo homer to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead. Igawa threw a perfect 3rd inning. In the 4th, Igawa gave up a 3-run homer to Michel Abreu to tie the score at 4. After SWB regained the lead with a Shelley Duncan home run, Igawa gave it back with a solo homer to tie the game at 5. He left the game after 5 innings with a 6-5 lead.

Igawa's line: 5.0 IP, 5 runs, 4 hits (3 HR), 2 K--3 walks
73 pitches--46 strikes, 5 groundouts--8 flyouts.

BULLPEN: David Robertson was outstanding in relief of Igawa, going 3 scoreless innings (6 thru 8th) with 7 strikeouts, 1 infield hit, and 1 walk. His brother Connor pitched in relief for Buffalo opposite him and also looked good.

Brett Tomko came pitched a perfect 9th inning, picking up 1 K and his 1st save.

OFFENSE: SWB squandered a bases loaded opportunity in the 2nd inning. In the 3rd they exploded for 4 runs. Eric Duncan walked, Shelley Duncan singled, and Austin Jackson hit an RBI single. The big blow was a 3-run homer by Justin Leone (1) to give SWB a 4-1 lead. Shelley Duncan hit an opposite field solo homer in the 5th to give SWB a 5-4 lead. In the 6th the Yanks scored 1 run on singles by Angel Berroa, Chris Stewart, and Kevin Russo to take a 6-5 lead.

Austin Jackson
continued his red hot hitting with 1 RBI and 3 singles.

NOTES: Juan Miranda won the International League Batter of the Week award with his league leading 11 RBI. Jason Johnson goes for SWB Tuesday against highly touted Mets farmhand Jonathan Niese.
