4/17 Minor League Report

We are lucky enough to have a SWB report from BigGuy tonight.
He won't be doing these all the time by when he does I will

(AAA) Scranton-Wilkes Barre (9-0) beat Rochester 11-0: Box Score - Recap

The SWB AAA Yankees finally had their home opener and extended their record to a perfect 9-0, pounding Rochester (Twins) 11-0. Roy White threw out the 1st pitch, and players were given rings for winning the 2008 Governor's Cup Championship in pregame ceremonies.

PITCHING: Phil Hughes made his 2nd start throwing 5.2 shutout innings in a very nice start. Hughes picked up the win (2-0)

1st Inning: Hughes threw a scoreless 1st after a double and a stolen base put a runner at 3rd with 1 out, he got 2 K's to get out of the jam.

2nd Inning: Hughes threw a 10 pitch perfect 2nd inning picking up a K.

3rd Inning: A scoreless 3rd. After getting 2 quick outs Hughes gave up a single, but got a groundout to 2nd to finish the inning. Thru 3 innings: 49 pitches--33 strikes.

4th Inning: Hughes gave up a leadoff single with a stolen base. He then got the next 3 batters, 2 on strikeouts, to strand a runner at 2nd.

5th Inning: Hughes gave up a 1 out single, but got 2 infield outs to keep the scoreless string going. Thru 5 innings, 80 pitches - 53 strikes.

6th Inning: Hughes got 2 quick outs in the 6th before giving up a double. He was relieved by Steven Jackson.

Hughes Line: 5.2 IP. 0 Runs, 5 Hits, 6 K's--0 Walks, ERA 2.31
96 pitches--64 strikes, 7 groundouts--4 flyouts.

BULLPEN: Steven Jackson relieved Hughes in the 6th with 2 out and a runner on 2nd base. Jackson gave up a walk before Shelley Duncan made a nice diving catch of a line drive in rightfield to end the inning. Jackson threw a scoreless 7th, giving up a single with 2 strikeouts. Jackson got 2 quick outs in the 8th before giving up 2 singles and being relieved by Tomko.
Brett Tomko came on to get the final out of the 8th on a strikeout. Tomko worked out of a jam in the 9th, with runners on 1st and 3rd, he got a DP to save the shutout.

OFFENSE: SWB broke out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. John Rodriguez walked, Todd Linden doubled, an error on a throw home on a grounder by Shelley Duncan scored Rodriguez. Angel Berroa's RBI double, and Justin Leone's RBI sac fly scored Linden and Duncan. The Yanks picked up 2 more runs in the 5th to increase their lead to 5-0. S. Duncan singled, Berroa followed with a 2-run homer. The Yanks exploded for 6 runs in the 8th inning. Key hits: Angel Berroa's 2nd 2-run homer of the game. Linden's 2-run triple, and RBI singles by Rodriguez and S. Duncan.

NOTES: Juan Miranda up to NY, David Robertson from NY back to SWB. Catcher Jose Gil up from Trenton. Austin Jackson had an xray on his bruised elbow that came back negative. Former Yankee Sean Henn pitched in relief for Rochester, striking out the first 5 batters he faced. Angel Berroa made a tremendous over the shoulder catch to go along with his 2 2-run homers, rbi double & single. Kei Igawa gets the start Saturday.
