4/22 Minor League Report

We are lucky enough to have a SWB report from BigGuy tonight.
He won't be doing these all the time by when he does I will
post them. Thanks BG for the great contributions.

(AAA) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (12-1) beat Buffalo 6-1: Box Score - Recap

The SWB Yankees bounced back from their 1st loss of the year with a 6-1 win over the Buffalo Bisons (Mets). Their record is now 12-1.

PITCHING: Phil Hughes made his 3rd start of the year in impressive style picking up the win, (3-0).

1st Inning: Scoreless. Hughes gave up a leadoff single, and picked up a strikeout.

2nd Inning: Hughes tossed a perfect 2nd inning with the help of a great catch by Shelley Duncan in deep right-center.

3rd Inning: Hughes worked out of a 1 out jam after giving up a single and double. He had 2 strikeouts in the inning. Thru 3 innings 44 pitches-34 strikes.

4th Inning: Hughes had a very impressive 4th inning, striking out the side on 13 pitches. 4 K's in a row, 6 thru 4 innings.

5th Inning: Another perfect inning for Hughes with 3 groundouts.

6th Inning: Hughes threw a scoreless 6th, giving up a 2-out single. He had retired 10 in a row. He threw only 8 pitches in the inning. Thru 6 innings, 79 pitches--58 strikes.

7th Inning: Hughes had a 5 pitch 7th, giving up a single and wiping it out with a doubleplay.

8th Inning: Hughes got 2 outs before giving up his 1st walk of the game followed by a single. He was relieved by Melancon.

Hughes Line: 7.2 IP, 1 run, 6 hits, 7 K's---1 walk, Pitches 105---strikes 75, 9 groundouts -- 7 flyouts.

BULLPEN: Mark Melancon relieved Hughes in the 8th with runners on 1st & 2nd and 2 outs. He gave up a 2-run double to blow the shutout before getting a strikeout to end the inning. Melancon tossed a scoreless 9th after giving up a lead off single. 1.1. IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 K.

OFFENSE: Freddy Garcia made his 1st start for Buffalo and took the loss giving up 3 runs in 6 innings. The Yanks got to Garcia for 2 runs in the 3rd inning. Doug Bernier had his 2nd double of the game. John Rodriguez walked. Both scored on Todd Linden's 2-run double to give SWB a 2-0 lead. Linden hit a solo homer (4) off Garcia in the 6th to give the Yanks a 3-0 lead. The Yanks added 2 more runs in the 7th when Eric Duncan doubled and scored on a wild pitch, and then Angel Berroa scored after an infield hit on Linden's league leading 16th RBI. In the 8th, Austin Jackson singled, stole 2nd (4), and scored on Berroa's RBI single to make the final score SWB 6-1.

NOTES: Todd Linden (2-4) and Austin Jackson (1-4) extended their hit streaks to 8 games. Jackson made a great catch in center.

Thanks for the updates. I have the suspicion that if they don't see significant improvement in Wang's simulated game, they'll DL him and call up Hughes for a few starts. Kennedy has pitched almost as well so far, but I think Hughes has proven he has the better makeup at this point.

I also get the feeling that if Jackson keeps this up, he'll be a mid-season call up.

Decent is a bit of an understatement. He's 3-0 with an ERA under two. That's better than decent.

What is he going to have to do, pitch shutouts every time out?
