4/24 Minor League Report

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees took the first game of the four game series against the Rochester Red Wings at the Frontier Field in Rochester, New York with the score of 6-2. Alfredo Aceves went 6.2 innings and allowed four hits and a walk but striking out six. It is his first win of the season. The losing pitcher, Anthony Swarzak, pitched three and two-third perfect innings before allowing a single to Todd Linden who led the Yankees with three hits. Here is the recap of the game:

PITCHING: Alfredo Aceves made his third start of the season, after two bad starts - he was outstanding his third start and was taken out with two outs in bottom of the sixth inning after allowing two consecutive singles.

First Inning - Held the Red Wings hitless and got a called strike out. 11 pitches.

Second Inning - Allowed the first hit of the game with a single to the right field and proceed to get a hitter to struck out looking for the second time. Then allowed a walk on four pitches. No harm done. 13 pitches - 24 total pitches.

Third Inning - Three up and three down. 8 pitches - 32 total pitches.

Fourth Inning - Another three up and three down. Picked up the third strikeout. 14 pitches - 46 total pitches.

Fifth Inning - Tenth consecutive batters retired. Struck out the last batter. 12 pitches - 58 pitches.

Sixth Inning - Threw the batter out on a bunt attempted then allowed a single, breaking the streak of eleventh consecutive batters retired. Final two batters retired on called strikeouts. 14 pitches - 72 pitches.

Seventh Inning - Got the first two batters out before allowing two consecutive singles. Was taken out with 83 pitches and replaced by Anthony Claggett who walked the first batter he faced. With the bases loaded, Claggett got out of a jam by allowing a pop up to the shortstop.

Eighth Inning - Three up and three down for Claggett.

Ninth Inning - Eric Wordekemper came in the game - allowed a single, a double, then a triple allowing two runners to score. Got the final out with a flyout to center field.

HITTING: The Red Wings outfielders made two great plays in the first inning, first with a nice diving catch and a jumping catch to end the inning. The offense were held hitless until the third and two-third inning when Todd Linden broke the streak of eleven consecutive batters retired with a single. The Yankees failed to score in the fourth inning. Scored the first run of the game in the sixth inning as P.J. Pilittere got on with a single followed by three consecutive singles by John Rodriguez, Linden, and Shelly Duncan. Juan Miranda was intentionally walked and Austin Jackson grounded out with the base loaded. The Yankees leads 2-0. The offense broke around in the eight inning as Linden singled to center field to open up the inning followed by four consective hits, a single by S. Duncan, a double by Miranda which drove in Linden home, then A-Jax tripled to center-right field which scored both Duncan and Miranda then Eric Duncan singled to left field. The Yankees led 6 to nothing by end of the eighth inning.

Pre-game notes: Saw Kei Igawa doing some running before his start on Saturday afternoon. Also saw Aceves sign a couple of balls for some fans before heading to prepare for the game. Did not see Phil Hughes - did he get called up to replace Wang? A lot of Yankees fans were at the game tonight.
