BREAKING NEWS: Bob Sheppard Retires

UPDATE 4:38 p.m.: Here's an update from Peter Abraham:
The Yankees refuted the report on Bob Sheppard retiring. Team officials said they spoke to his son Paul, who denied making the statements attributed to him. But Mr. Sheppard is 98, in ill health and has not worked a game since 2007. The odds of his return are slim. Hopefully he’s able to announce a game or two this season.
Hopefully this is true, and he can come back. But as Abraham says, it seems those chances are slim.

Here's some very disappointing news fom Jack Curry:
The new Yankee Stadium will sound much different than the old one. Bob Sheppard, the public-address announcer for the Yankees since 1951, has retired.

Paul Doherty, a friend and agent who has represented Sheppard, said Sheppard’s son, Paul, told him about Sheppard’s plans on Wednesday morning.

“I think Bob just wants to take it easy and no longer have the pressure of, ‘Can he? Will he? Or won’t he?’” Doherty said in an e-mail message. “And, at 98, who can blame him?”

Doherty added that Sheppard remained active.

“I’m happy to say that Bob is still doing well enough to drive a car,” Doherty said. “He picked his son up at the train this past weekend.”
The article also states that Jim Hall, Sheppard's longtime backup, will not be Sheppard's replacement. They've hired Paul Olden to do the two games against the Cubs.

UPDATE 3:24 p.m.: Here's a little info on Paul Olden:

Paul has been the radio and/or television play-by-play announcer for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, New York Yankees, California Angels, Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets and New Jersey Nets. Paul has also broadcast several sports for Fox Sports Net, ESPN, The Football Network and KMPC-AM in Los Angeles.

Since 1994, has been the stadium public address announcer for every Super Bowl since 1994.

wow, i know i haven't been on here in a while, and i have to read this? damn, first the stadium, now the voice of god............ what the hell is the world coming to? who's gonna be his replacement?

Greg Cohen said...

They don't know yet... I really don't understand why Jim Hall isn't going to be picked. At least he sort of sounded like Sheppard.

^ I rather have just a new voice rather then an imitation.

YES A new voice is needed, Jim Hall tried to sound too much like Bob last season, and there is only 1 voice of God

What can be said except, like the Stadium... 'end of an era'. Yes, I wonder why not Jim Hall. Hopefully, whoever is hired , the guy (sorry, ladies) will be able to emulate Mr. Sheppard. His voice came as not only one that could articulate and enunciate the spoken English language in a beautiful fashion, but a voice the also clearly represented the dignity of the Yankee franchise.
Hopefully the organization does not go the route of a current day
high-decibled 'corny' BLABBERMOUTH!

Another gorgeous piece of the past is lost...

They should of definitely recorded his voice for way more things than just Jeter coming to back. Things like "Welcome to Yankee Stadium", the seventh inning stretch/kate smith, and other small things to at least carry on the tradition. the possibilities are endless and the yankees never did anything about it

I think they have some recordings that they will use. They did last year. I remember hearing Bob say "Welcome to Yankee Stadium" playing over the PA outside of the stadium last year.

Wow this is a real sad day in Yankee land i least i got to say i been in Yankee stadium and heard Bob Sheppard. It was pretty cool going in the stadium and as soon as i see the field boob Sheppard says welcome to Yankee stadium.

Greg Cohen said...

I know how you all feel. Personally I'm losing the sounds of my childhood. I have no more vivid memories than going to Yankee Stadium with my dad, hearing Eddie Layton playing the organ, and Bob Sheppard on the PA.

We lost Eddie a few years back and now we've officially lost Sheppard. At least Sheppard is still alive and may be able to record some things for future use.

A suggestion to current Yankees: record Sheppard introducing you and use it this season.

Now batting the first baseman, number 25, Mark Teixeira. Number 25.

New Stadium, new voice. I'm not that upset about it really. Time for some new blood for the new stadium.

Greg i absolutely agree that would be a great idea.

This is a very sad day for me. I stayed home from school and baseball practice because I had a fever, and now I have to hear this. I just can't believe it.

Now we should get that guy from YouTube to be his replacement. Have you seen his videos? They're amazing.

Here's a link to him announcing the 2007 Yankees lineup:

This is sad news, but he was 98! God Bless him.

Maybe this is where Bernie can come back. He plays a little intro with his guitar and then introduces each player, a perfect fit!!!

Brian Danuff said...

Wait, I'm listening to Mike Francesca (WFAN) and he says a New York Times report says Sheppard never said he was retiring like his friend Paul said.

Peter abraham just reported that the team has spoken to his son and hes denying the statement i hope this is true. One of my goals was when i have my first son i wanted to take him to the stadium and hear that famous voice.

I stayed home from school today with a fever and a cough. I really hope I get better before the game. I'm really starting to get worried, I feel really crappy right now.

Greg Cohen said...

You'll be better Yankeeboy. Just get some rest over the next two days.

Brian Danuff said...

I hope so. I'm talking medicine so that is working right now.
