The opener of the New Yankee Stadium started off great. The weather was perfect, the pre-game ceremonies were, as they normally are with the Yankees, well done and classy, and CC Sabathia and Indians' ace Cliff Lee squared off it what was looking like a classic pitchers' duel. But the day quickly went south when Jose Veras and Damaso Marte came into the game in the seventh. Veras allowed three runs on a walk and two doubles without recording an out and amazingly Marte was actually worse. He allowed six runs on three hits a walk, and a hit batsman. He also allowed two homers, a grand slam off the bat of Grady Sizemore and a solo shot from Victor Martinez. It was a truly pathetic performance from the Yankees middle relievers today.

The one bright spot out of the pen today was David Robertson who pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three.

Sabathia looked pretty good today. He threw 5.2 innings of one-run baseball, but walked five along the way which led to a very high pitch count and an early exit. You'd like to see him be a bit more efficient, 122 pitches is way too much for 5.2 innings, but all in all it was a pretty decent performance, he certainly pitched well enough to win the game.

The Yankees offense did not look good on the day, but I'll give Lee most of the credit for that. Then again, when you leave 15 men on base you have to take some of the blame for that. In six innings he allowed one run on seven scattered hits to pick up his first win of the year. The lone Yankee run off Lee came in the fifth inning when Jorge Posada hit a solo homer. They had several opportunities throughout the game, but failed to come up with that big hit each time.

They added one more in the seventh on a Robinson Cano RBI single, but the game had already been decided by then.

It wasn't the way the Yankees or their fans had hoped to open their new "palace" in the Bronx, but hopefully their are better days ahead. One thing's for sure, the Yanks need to sort out these middle relief issues or else today's game will repeat itself over and over again through the season..... And no, that doesn't mean move Joba to the pen.

I was at the game and the new stadium is a pretty impressive building. I didn't explore that much of the place, I just walked through the great hall and around the field level concourse on my way to my seats. The view from the bleachers is great, as was the view from my other seats (long story) in the upper deck. Beer in the bleachers was also great. The concourses are wide and spacious, with a view of the field. The bathrooms were huge and clean - though the clean part will probably change after a homestand or two. Besides that, I don't have any elaborate review of the place or anything, but like I said it's a very impressive building. But with all that it's still not the old place - nothing will ever be like the old place - but hopefully the new one will grow on me and I'll learn to love it, but it will certainly take some getting used to..... Oh, and for those worried about the retired numbers in Monument Park being hidden - as I was - they painted all the numbers on a wall over the left field bleachers so now they're visible to most fans. They also painted the list of 26 championships on a wall in right field.

I cant believe Cashman gave Marte a 3 year deal. What exactly did he do last year for us that he deserved a 3 year deal. Cashman should of just excercised Marte's 1year option and see what he does this year.

Veras sucks now people should know why Girardi pulled him in KC after 1 batter. He is an all or nothing type guy most of the time he gives you nothing.

I prefer Robertson, Coke or Edwar over Veras atleast they throw strikes.

first things first, bring up Melancon and or Tomko

Not a bad idea Dan. I also think Robertson needs to be given a shot at important innings.

Jose Veras sucks. Great stuff is useless if you can't come in and throw strikes.

This was all precipitated by two things today:

1) Joe Girardi leaving CC in too long. While he did leave the game with 2 outs and only a man on, a reliever should have been brought in the from the start to pitch the inning. Probably Edwar. If Edwar pitches a clean inning, then Coke is available for the 7th, and things play out differently.

2) Cody Ransom's error on the routine grounder. If he makes the play, then Edwar can come out for the 7th and Coke is still available in the pen.

Both of these scenarios are likely to result in a situation where Veras isn't in the game to start the 7th.

Veras should either be demoted to AAA or demoted to mop up duty. He's cost us TWO games now with walks.

You know I LOVES me some Phil Coke, but homeboy needs to go down n work on some stuff, its just not there. Bring up Tomko before he walks in June n goes to Toronto or something n makes us pay for it. But Robertson is a step in the right direction.

Abraham complained about the lack of excitement at the new stadium. Or, at least, how quiet it was. Did you notice it too? Is it something we should be worried about? I, along with many other fans, love the roar of the crowd when something good/exciting/amazing happens.

The stadium did sound pretty quiet throughout the game. But the roar when Posada homered, after Jeter's double play, and Ransom diving stop was loud and sounded like the old stadium.

id love an answer on the comparative noise level between the old and new stadiums

Greg Cohen said...

Me too Anon, but I don't think we'll get anything definitive, just opinions from people who have been to both.

Oh guys, I forgot to mention that David Wells was sitting in the left field bleachers for most of the game. He was about ten rows in front of me and a section over. He was in one of the few sec. 239 seats that isn't obstructed. Pretty cool to see Boomer sitting out there.

Very cool that you were there, Greg. Like others, I was wondering about what seemed like a dead crowd. No chants (except the "We want Swisher" in the 7th) or huge cheers. Maybe it was just the MLB Network feed I was watching?

i know it's madd early and i'm typin' this before i head off to school, but...............

all in all, i think we have a beautiful new stadium. i saw the pregame and postgame on YES (couldn't watch the actual game on YES cause i live in maryland) but i caught it on the MLB Network. very beautiful. i can't say it was a real pitching fight between lee and sabathia, cause both looked "ok". they did what they had to do to get outta innings. but, yeah, the main focus is on the pen. i honestly expected it to be a close game all the way through. robertson should definately be put into more roles to get to mo in the 9th. marte and veras needs some work. i mean, it's still early in the season, but just some tune up will do fine.

i know me, as much as every other yankee wanted the first win in the stadium, but hey, it's still early in the season. we won't end up like the mets and lose a series in the new ballpark. we got the rest of the weekend to hop on the top spot in the AL East, and demolish the indians.

GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(and now i'm off to school lol)

While Veras and his penchant for throwing non-strikes is frustrating, the calls for Robertson to be getting key innings and outs is a bit premature. Robertson was only called up yesterday. Girardi has to give the big situation to the guys he broke camp with. If he gives the ball to Robertson there what does that say to the rest of the fellas in the pen? Furthermore, if Robertson pulls a Veras/Marte, fans would be all over Girardi for going to a guy who's been in AAA. This game certainly shows that Veras has not learned to throw strikes, despite having great stuff, and for the future indicates that a change is most likely in order. But to say Robertson should have been the one getting those outs, because he had two good innings in a mop up role yesterday, is knee jerk at best.

tells you something when they have to repeat the retired numbers in another area so they can be seen. Again, they are blocking the wide concourses with venders to sell crap and making the concourse as small as the old building in places. My brother (who's in construction) picked up on the handicap platforms blocking views and the flatness of the grandstands making it difficult to see the action to either side.

Fans were flat because the game was boring. Outside of the Posada HR every batter was 3/2 with about 6 million left on base. Nothing to get excited about. Want to see how many show up in those $2500 seats for today's game.

Was the game a sellout? I thought the posted attendance was like 49,000 plus. I thought it held 51 and change 52 with standing room.

Greg, did you notice PeteAbe's comments on the stadium? Read his "Impressions of the Opener", and let me know if you agree with his thoughts. Also, do you have any new thoughts on the upper deck placement? Were you up there at all? One of the other POTY bloggers will be at tomorrow's game, so I'm curious to see what you guys think of it from a 'true fan's standpoint'.

I watched the game on T.V. and I thought the cheers for Pauly O and Bernie would be louder. The Stadium looked great but who can we complain to about the stupid screen that is now in every shot when the ball is put in play. I was hoping that they would get that fixed in the time they had between the exhibition games and yesterday.
