The Cost of the 2009 Yankees: $201 Million

Well, $201,449,289 to be exact, which is down about $ 8 million (3.65%) from last year's $209,081,579 total. Not bad when you can sign Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, and A.J. Burnett and still lower your payroll. The Journal News posted this Major League Baseball salary database today. On it you can find the salaries for every player and the payroll for every team around the league.

Here's the rest of the top ten:

2. Mets - $135,773,988
3. Cubs - $135,050,000
4. Red Sox - $122,696,000
5. Tigers - $115,085,145
6. Angels - $113,709,000
7. Phillies - $113,004,048
8. Astros - $102,996,415
9. Dodgers - $100,458,101
10. Mariners - $98,904,167

The bottom three teams were the Pirates with $48,743,000, the Padres with $42,796,700, and the Marlins with a payroll of $38,814,000, or just about six million more than Alex Rodriguez is making.

I'm surprised they were able to get it that low. Who knows, maybe next year they can get it under $200 million?

Possibly.

They likely will be under $200 mil. Damon and Matsui probably not back. That's 26 mil right there.
Nady could be gone that's 6 million.
Pettitte gone (really think this is his last year) that's another 5 million off.

So as much as 37 million could be off.

the name on that list suprises me the most is the dodgers. of course i dont know their books, but the dodgers brand is known nation wide, has extensive interest in nyc and could be a national franchise like the yankees redsox and cubs if they would step up their marketing a bit, and they are the premium franchise of the second largest city in the country. i am very suprised their payroll is so low.

Next year the yankees will have around 40 million. Plus we have Austin Jackson who will be ready by next year. Payroll will be decreased by 40 million next year.

So possibly are outfield next year will be Gardner, Swisher and Jackson.

Also Pettitte will be gone and Hughes will get his spot.

I know, I was so surprised to see them that high.
