News & Notes

- Bangin Pots: The Freddie Sez Story: A friend of mine sent this to me and wanted me to share it with you guys.

As a tribute to the old Yankee Stadium (or the newer incarnation of the old Yankee Stadium) No Mas (no relation to NoMaas.org) made a short documentary last year about Fred Schuman aka Freddie Sez. On the way from his Upper West Side apartment to the Bronx for the Stadium's last opening day, the eighty-three year old tells tells the story of his transformation into the Yankees' pan-and-spoon-carrying unofficial mascot. You can check out more from NoMas TV on their website.

- For some stupid reason the Yankees optioned Dave Robertson back to Scranton. Don't they realize that this guy could help them? And with the way Jose Veras and Damaso Marte pitched yesterday it looks like they could use all the help they can get. First baseman Juan Miranda was called up to replace Robertson on the roster.

- The reason the Yankees felt like they needed an extra hitter is because Hideki Matsui's surgically repaired left knee filled up with fluid yesterday and had to be drained. Apparently being on base four times is just too much for Matsui to handle right now. My only problem is that I would have kept Robertson with the team and sent someone else down.

- Joba Chaberlain has faced the Indians five times in his career, all in relief, and he's 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA in six innings of work.

- Anthony Reyes has never pitched against the Yankees.

- Xavier Nady took a second X-ray yesterday on his right elbow, and is scheduled to undergo a CT scan today. Nady says "It gives me hope," that he may be able to avoid season-ending surgery.

- Alex Rodriguez to 49 swings in his first full batting practice session yesterday. He hit three home runs, one to right, one to left, and one to deep left-center. He also hit several line drives and shots near or off the wall.

- With three more hits and walk yesterday Robinson Cano is now hitting .421/.488/.632. At this point last season he was hitting .179/.200/.205.

- If you'd like to see some pictures that I took from yesterday's game, you can check the whole gallery out here. Sorry, but the battery on my camera died before I could get pictures of the view that I had from the upper deck. Stupid me forgot to charge the battery overnight.

- Here's a list of all the New Yankee Stadium firsts from yesterday's game.

Stick around and discuss the game
as it happens in the comments section.

Truthfully this would be my everyday...I would interchange swisher and matsui at DH, allowing Swisher to play a litle bit of OF as well. But he sucks at OF so I'd rather have Melky play RF. I also think Swisher would cool off greatly if he starts playing everyday.

lineups announced for the indians as well greg

Greg Cohen said...

Adding them as I type this.

Anonymous said...

lol thanks

Anonymous said...

What was the reason on the Robertson send down/Miranda call up?

We already have two first basemen, and if it's for him to DH because Matsui can't play, then that's still not the best solution.

Molina catching with Jorge DH would be better, imo.

Plus, Robertson was the only guy out of the pen that could get outs, and he looked good.

Nice pics, Gary. Be sure to bring backup batteries next week for the upper deck. I am very anxious to hear your pros and cons from up there.

What kind of lens do you use? You had some nice close-ups.

Greg Cohen said...

Nyyfn,

It makes no sense to me. Robertson should stay here and be given a chance.

Thanks SteveB, I know I was so pissed at myself.

I have a little Canon PowerShot SD950 SI that I really like.

By the way, who's Gary?

I think it's my Karma that people always mix up Gary for Greg because when I was about 15 I got my first fake I.D. and I used the name Gary.

Greg Cohen said...

By the way, the Yankees are saying they called up Miranda because Matsui will probably be limited to pinch-hitting over the next few days because his surgically repaired left knee filled with fluid after yesterday's game. Apparently being on base four times is just too much for Hideki to handle at this point.

Okay guys. Three things from yesterday.

1.) Where was AROD??? Nady was there, in uniform, on the DL. Would have it killed him to get on the charter on Wednesday night with his teammates, come to the Stadium and then fly back yesterday afternoon?? NOT A TRUE YANKEE! If Jeter was rehabing on the DL and the Yankees were literally flying from Tampa to NY the night before, are you telling me that Jeter wouldn't have been on the plane for the first game ever at the Stadium???

2.) I was there and have been a season ticket holder my ENTIRE life. First, opening day crowds STINK. They are like World Series game 1 crowds. Too many celebs, high profile people. Lets hear the crowd this weekend to get a real feel for it. Crowd noise CANNOT be measured on opening day.

3.)Greg, I hardly EVER disagree with you, but Posada didn't deserve a curtain call??? It was the FIRST HOMERUN EVER at the new Stadium. I was hoping it would be hit by a TRUE Yankee, ie Jeter, Posada and it was. The first homer ever hit at the old stadium was Babe Ruth. THAT WAS A BIG DEAL AND I WOULD HAVE BEEN SCHOCKED IF THERE WASN'T A CURTAIN call.

SteveB said...

Hahaha, I had just gotten off the phone with a guy named Gary, sorry. I hate when that happens...... GREG!

I am not happy over Matsui's situation. I expected him to be a productive DH. If he's not, the Yankees will need to make a move I think.

Greg Cohen said...

You know what Peter I didn't even think about that. Good point about Posada's injury.

Anonymous said...

Starting off on the right foot I see....well good thing it is only 10 games and 1 inning into the season. We have 151 games and 8 innings to go.....I'm sure this team will start hitting with RISP unlike like the first inning. Good thing we have Posada and Matsui back. Now, we just need Arod and our salvation is complete.... Great job Cashman and Girardi you're winnners in my book.

Greg Cohen said...

Wow there are a ton of empty seats in the field level.

Anonymous said...

This team is so exciting that I am on the edge of my seat...

Greg Cohen said...

If u hate the team so much why are you watching?

Mario said...

Ransom is RANCID, does he even know that the bat is for him to swing....

Anonymous said...

I am sorry but I am getting tired of hearing people complain about A-Rod not being at opening day. Would it have been a nice jesture to be there, sure. But it is not like he is sunbathing in Central Park. He is working hard on his rehab so that he can save the team from more innings of Cody "Mendoza line" Ransome. The sooner he gets back the better, and any time not rehabbing is a waist of time. If he did go to opening day people would ask why he wasn't working on his rehab. As for Nady there he really had nothing better to do. He is waiting to find out from the docs if his season is totally over or only half over.

Joba looks good despite the early homer. Now lets get some offense!

Anonymous said...

i called the homer last night in the TEX cortisone shot thread.. lol

nice

Back to Back and Belly to Belly!

JC said...

Wow. There are a LOT of empty seats around home. A LOT. It really makes the Yankees look bad. Not only in the Legends sections, but in those $350 seats.

They need to come up with some deal where people buy those seats. If those seats are empty all summer.... That doesn't look good. Although, I guess that'll definitely get them lowered for next season.

JC said...

Nice to see Tex get a homer there, too. He was only a few more at-bats away from really hearing some boos.

Anonymous said...

"If u hate the team so much why are you watching?"

There's your straw man.

Wow, a couple of bombs with nobody on....even there HR's are boring.

RISP and they SO/GO/GIDP. Nobody on they hit HR's vs. a bum. I really loved that weak bunt to the right side by Jeter on a hitters count.

Greg Cohen said...

I only say that because I can't see how you enjoy watching these games.

anonyMOOSE said...

Too many balls for Joba. If he'd be a little more aggressive, he'd have a dramatically lower pitch count.

Right now with 2 out in the 4th, he's at 71 pitches: 36 strikes, 35 balls, and the walk to Halfner just came around to score.

Very frustrating. Especially after the Yankees just scored two to give you the lead, you need to come back and fire the strikes in there and shut them down. Not take all day throwing balls all over the place.

Mario said...

Joba will be lucky to make it thru the 5th at this rate, way too many pitches and walks....

JC said...

Because Anon is one of those fans that just isn't happy unless he's bitching and complaining about something.

It's annoying as hell, too.

Anonymous said...

LOL, I don't. In fact, I want my money back from the Steinbreinners and Directv for the MLB Ticket. This is BS. $200m team and they stink. Only Cashman could get away with it and people tolerate it.

And, Joba blows as a starter. He maybe a starter at some point but now. He throws way too many pitches to be an effective starter. How the blankety-blank can he walk two people, and one with a 1-2 count and have 70 pitches threw 3 2/3 and call yourself a starter? He can't.

anonyMOOSE said...

"Wow, a couple of bombs with nobody on....even there HR's are boring."

And your grammar sucks. What are you, 5? If you think back to back solo homeruns to take the lead, then you are clearly watching the wrong sport.

Anonymous said...

And, its MORE annoying to listen to you POSITIVE idiots blabber about POSITIVE garbage because you refuse to face the truth. ANd, this is why it bothers you because it is the truth and your mind/heart are telling you so but you want to believe a lie. This team is BS. All thanks to the great Brian Cashman.

anonyMOOSE said...

"Anonymous" (how the heck hard is it to type in a name in the box so we can keep track of who's who):

Your comments about how "this team is BS" (I don't know how a team can be "BS" but that's a different story) are nothing more than your opinion based on 10 games. You're a typical spoiled rotten Yankees fan who has no concept or understanding of the fact that baseball is a 162 game season. Go watch some football where you can be reactionary all you want and Brian Cashman won't be the bain of your life.

Greg Cohen said...

HaHaha you're right Will.

And, you guys with your positive garbage get underneath my skin. If I can tolerate you then you can tolerate me.....but then again liberals aren't very liberal/tolerant/open-minded anyways. You're only tolerant if it is your little one-sided prejudiced viewpoint.

And, no I am not trying to get under your skin. The real quesiton is why dont you want your team to be better? Do you enjoy sucking? HOw many years have we had problems with RISP? How many years has Cashman not accomplished a thing? Why do you still support him?

Will said...

how about a campaign to make the richy rich CEO's hate being at the stadium?

Greg Cohen said...

Joba looks pretty bad.

Mario said...

thanks JOBA, needed 6 innings today would have been nice, but you are bombing bad, can't even make it to the 5th , punk...

JC said...

Joba needs to cut it out with these BS walks. He's getting himself into too much trouble with them! He's blown two leads now.

anonyMOOSE said...

Joba has no command at all. He's not the best control pitcher in the world, but this is far worse than usual. Two walks to Asdrubal Cabrera? Sickening.

Anonymous said...

Joba's dealing eh. Lets see, the Indians can hit with RISP and the Yankees? No, I dont' think so...

Hey Girardi, bring in Marte because the Indians need double digits and it will get your terminated quicker.

Greg Cohen said...

I was wondering the same thing JC.

Will said...

we should unleash Anon on the legends seats

Peter F. said...

Okay...ITS UNOFFICIAL, BUT...THIS JUST IN!!!...BREAKING NEWS!!!

SCRANTON PA, Ap Wire: Phil Hughes will be called up and replace Joba Chamberlain in the Yankees starting rotation. Joba will become the 8th inning guy with Bruney available in the 6th and 7th. The New York Yankees, in turn, will actually start to WIN GAMES.

Peter F. said...

Joba= 47 balls, 45 k's. Terrible. Thats Sidney Ponson stuff!

dan said...

i called it yesterday that joba would only go 5... then the shitty part of the pen will come in.. fucking Joba..DONT WALK PEOPLE! Damon is so bad in LF, he will clearly cost us games.. probably including today

Will said...

lots of negativity for such a sunny day. LOL.

anonyMOOSE said...

Why couldn't it have been Joba yesterday and CC today.

Will said...

"Why couldn't it have been Joba yesterday and CC today."

That's not how marketing works

Anonymous said...

That is a really nice starting outfield you assembled Cashman! $200 million doesn't buy much.

What did this team do during Spring Training? Wang's not ready. Joba's not ready. Ransom's not ready. Anybody that did well during Spring Training got send down and anybody that didn't do well got a job.

Will said...

What is Joba's problem? Did he throw so many balls when working out of the pen. He throws waaaay too many pitches. That can not go on if they want to keep him in the rotation.

Will said...

Greg, do balls seem to carry better in the new park?

JC said...

CC started yesterday because it was his day to pitch. They want to keep CC on regular rest. Has nothing to do with marketing.

Anonymous said...

LOL, yup, it never has anything to do with $$$$$.

Anonymous said...

See? Damon hits a HR with no one on base and does nothing with RISP. Typical.

Rich said...

just a base hit now, that's all..

Rich said...

Dammit

Anonymous said...

and this is why the stadium hasnt gotten loud over the past 2 games...

Anonymous said...

Garbage team. What a bunch of overpaid, overhyped bums. How many times have they done nothing with RISP? The 2-7 Indians do better vs. a tougher pitcher. What kind of moron GM and Manager counts on a 37 year old catcher? Speaking of that what is our record and ERA with Posada vs. Molina as catcher?

Mario said...

wow, bronx bombers, 3 solo HR's, can't get a hit W/ RISP... injuries piling up, i didn't wanna believe it, but we are the OLD yankees. We need some youth, next yrs outfield will be totally new too, goodbye Matsui, Damon, Nady...

Anonymous said...

next years outfield may consist of A-JAX, swish and matt holliday

Unknown said...

Thaaaaaats the Phil Coke we all know n love...

Anonymous said...

If so, about 3 years too late. Thanks to the brilliance of Brian Cashman.

And, how is that other teams OFers can make routine or above routine plays and we can't?

Greg Cohen said...

Good to see Coke throwing 94 again.

Anonymous said...

i think you're overreating a little. its not cash's fault that nady, matsui and arod got injured. if they knew this was gonna happen they woulda signed manny

Anonymous said...

coke looks like he did last september

Anonymous said...

if only this came one batter earlier.. nice shot by cano

Will said...

thank god these Cleveland pitchers suck

Anonymous said...

The season has just started and the Yankees are building a pretty good foundation to be successful for years to come. They have a fairly young pitching staff and will always have the ability to purchase big hitters. Everyone needs to enjoy the games for now and then start worrying if need be come mid June.

Rich said...

did i just see Ransom get a hit? is this a dream?

Anonymous said...

ROFLMAO, the Cleveland pitchers suck? What are the Yankees pitchers then?

Again, it is with no RISP. If I was there I would have thrown the ball back and told him to get a hit with RISP you bum.

Will said...

So it might be time for the Yankees to start thinking about investing in ground ball pitchers. Its only April and balls just keep heading for the exits. We'll see what happens in August - but I dont think its bad speculation to think the stadium with these more open ramps is a quite a bit more breezy

Anonymous said...

a game now has the same value as a game in june.. you are right, we cant go crazy but a late inning loss now stings just as much as it does in august

Anonymous said...

Its not Cashman's fault? Bwahahahh! Yes, he didn't know that Matsui would get old! ROFLMAO. It is not possible for you to be this dumb. Furthermore, Nady has NEVER done anything. He was a .260 hitter and did the exact same thing for the Yankees last year. There is nothing special about Nady. And, every other team has injuries.

You are exactly why this team sucks. Because you continue to WANT mediocrity. No wonder New York states sucks and we continue to elect the same rotten politicians.

Anonymous said...

why dont you just #@$% yourself you little 16 year old bitch

Will said...

championship teams win the one run games and don't give up late inning losses - those are the margin games that set the 90 game winners apart from the 100 game winners. sad but true. this bullpen could really hurt them bad.

Will said...

this thread is now about 16 bitches

Unknown said...

Ransom is a much better hitter off the bench... I wish Pena would start more.

Will said...

this game

Anonymous said...

2 walks and an error and they can only get ONE RUN. Yup, you guys are right, I am now convinced. This is not last years team, they are worse!

Anonymous said...

The BP could hurt, hitting with RISP will definitely hurt and this is not limited to one game Ken. Get a clue. Posada has been doing this garbage for YEARS. Try watching and learning something instead of being another moron news mafia tard.

Unknown said...

Brian Bruney looks like a completely different guy now that he lost all that weight.

Funny thing is, Swisher has his old number 33, and his fat face makes him look more like Brian Bruney than Brian does right now haha.

Anonymous said...

Bruney's the man....we just need a solid 7th man

Anonymous said...

Only a blind, deaf and dumb Manager would send Matsui up there to hit. Absolutley clueless.

Anonymous said...

Melky, now 4 for his last 10, but does this kid ever get a clutch hit when it matters most when there are guys on base? Either its a pop up or a double play...
