News & Notes

- This is the first time that Johnny Damon is hitting third as a Yankee.

- Steven Jackson has been called up, Anthony Claggett was sent back down.

- A.J. Burnett is 1-4, with a 7.20 ERA in five starts against Cleveland. Last year he was 0-1, with a 3.52 ERA in one start against Cleveland. He went 7.2 IP, allowing three runs on five hits, walked three and struck out seven.

He will also be making his first start as a Yankee at home. At the old place he was 2-2, with a 2.88 ERA in four starts.

- In two starts in his career against the Yankees Carl Pavano is 0-1, with a 7.71 ERA. At the old Yankee Stadium he was 4-3, with a 6.12 ERA in 13 starts.

- Bronx Bandbox: Add Yankees manager Joe Girardi and Indians manager Eric Wedge to the growing list of people who think this new stadium plays small:

"It seems to be playing somewhat short. You don't see this many home runs usually," he said after yesterday's 22-4 loss to the Indians. "It's too early to tell, but the early indications are the balls are carrying to right field."

"It definitely does fly [to right] here as compared to the old Stadium," said Cleveland manager Eric Wedge.

- Here's a story about Nick Swisher from Kevin Devaney, who is subbing for Pete Abe:
Just before we left, good ‘ol Nick Swisher walked through the clubhouse and tore off the covers of all the Daily News sitting on a table. They read “22-4!” on the front and “You Stink” over a picture of Chien-Ming Wang on the back. “New day,” Swisher shouted. “It’s a new day, brotha.”
Stick around and discuss the game
as it happens in the comments section.

old old yankee satdium had an even shorter right field corner and an even shorter wall in both corners. i for one like this new rightfield effect - this strongly favors the left hand pitchers which is how old old stadium player - over the next years the yankees will want to heavily invest in top lefties - this will give them a decided homefield advantage. and its preety sweet watching baseballs banging all over the place out there

Interesting lineup.

gotta love Swisher

Where is all the noise? Two strikes on a hitter and the damn place sounds like a funeral home!

Greg Cohen said...

It really is quiet.

Greg Cohen said...

Now they're clapping.

Anonymous said...

Wait, is Kay apologizing for Pavano being a gigantic waste of money?

Anonymous said...

So it was all Mussina's fault that Pavano was useless? I'm glad I got that straight! Thanks, Michael.

- Brian

Greg Cohen said...

LOL that's about right.

Greg Cohen said...

I just wanted to share this with you. My dad just goes "Pavano looks like Christy Mathewson."

Will said...

are the legends seats empty again?

Greg Cohen said...

Yea, pretty much the same as the last two games.

Will said...

wow - what a buzz kill. why dont those retard CEOs at least unload the tickets at some reasonable price on stubhub if they're not going to bother going.

Greg Cohen said...

Wow, the stadium is so quiet you can hear that umpire saying "off his foot, off his foot."

Will said...

ESPN has joined the bandbox band wagon - no new insights however

Brian Danuff said...

Burnett may have gave up the homer to Choo, but otherwise he's looked pretty sharp.

Greg Cohen said...

Wow what a play. Yanks flashing some leather today.

Anonymous said...

Nice pick there by Tex.

Greg Cohen said...

Yea, he's fine. A few too many fly balls, but overall pretty good.

Brian Danuff said...

Yeah. Like Kay just said, it brings back memories of Donnie and Constant-Tino.

Anonymous said...

I have the feeling that Giambi would have taken that one off his melon or just waved at it.

Greg Cohen said...

hahahaha you're probably right Anon.

And Yankeeboy, Mattingly was the best I've ever seen.

Will said...

stadium looks empty in general - saw the choo homer highlight and lots of empty seats in the outfield and seems like in the tier as well. im surprised one cant get better deals on stubhub.

looks like it pretty much would suck to even get some legends tickets - you wouldn't be sitting with anyone. half the fun is sitting among a bunch of other roudy yankee fans. when I've had tickets on the field level half the fun was the people you would meet in the seats around you. now, you get to sit by yourself. the waitress is just there to keep you from feeling completely alone.

Greg Cohen said...

And Pavano is perfect through three... shoot me now.

Anonymous said...

If he keeps pitching a gem, I'd say there would be a riot, but it looks like there's not enough (actual) fans to cause much of a commotion.

Anonymous said...

This crowd is awful. They're not even applauding strikes.

Brian Danuff said...

Now why couldn't Pavano do this when he was with the Yankees?

Anonymous said...

Losing 3 out of the first 4 games at the new Stadium? Embarrassing.

Anonymous said...

What's the excuse today? Is it the stadium, the weather, the sky, the rain, the sun, the mooon or ......? This great lineup can't hit Pavano? Hey guys maybe this "great" lineup STINKS? Ever think of that.

We can add another aspect of building a baseball team that Cashman isn't good at. DEFENSE. Nice play by Damon/Ransom ealier in the game. The Yankees have terrible OFers, terrible up the middle defense and they can't hit. What a winner Cashman. Congratulations on the being the biggest failure ever. You deserve it. And, nice stadium too. Well done. Bravo.

Greg Cohen said...

Nobody has been making any excuses.

Anonymous said...

Nice!

Anonymous said...

Brett Gardner swings like a girl and puts the ball in the air too much.

Anonymous said...

Who's his replacement? Cashman, are you there? Lets see...."um....er....umm....er....".Exactly they have no one. That is a big fat ZERO. Cashman is a complete failure. Worst starting or potential OF in the bigs. Melky is horrible, Damon is horrible and no one in the minors.

Anonymous said...

ZzzzzzzZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZz. That is our lineup. And, anohter great one by Girardi I might add. Pavano gets through the 5th on 8 pitches. Girardi should be fired. Hitting coach should be fired. Pitching coach should be fired. Cashman should be fired.

Liam Gallagher said...

It's just the begining of the season. They always play like this early in the season. But not like this though.

Anonymous said...

sure liam.

Anonymous said...

I just watched an interesting take on Wang's issues. the MLB Tonight crew thinks that the foot is still aggravating him because the knee is lower in the windup and he is slouching.

Liam Gallagher said...

If Wang says he's fine, then he's fine. And thats what he has been saying.

Liam Gallagher said...

Damn it Jeter!

Liam Gallagher said...

Lets go Teix.

Anonymous said...

Awesome decision there, Joe. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Can Swisher do it? I doubt it. Jeter is killing this team.

Anonymous said...

Great job Swisher. Another Cashman player. Spare me the look at what he's done garbage. This team can NOT hit with RISP. Of course, it was killed by none other than Jeter.

Anonymous said...

ive never been more embarassed to root for this team, even when we blew three game lead to rox.
To come out and let Pavano off the hook like this today is inexcusable.
For the fans 2 , the guy should be getting shit thrown at him , meanwhile he is barely getting booed.

Greg Cohen said...

Ransom has been a lot better with the glove during this series.

Anonymous said...

Wanna bet the Indians get a hit with RISP?

Greg Cohen said...

You would have lost that bet.

Anonymous said...

Sure would have. But you can't bet after its over.

Well, lets hope Jeter doesn't come up with men on base this inning.

Greg Cohen said...

I know, that's why I said you would have lost.

Anonymous said...

Wait a minute! Did we just get a hit with RISP!? I am watching the same game or am I dreaming.....

Liam Gallagher said...

3-2 now, nice.

Anonymous said...

Ugggggggggggggghhhhhhhhh!

Will said...

wtf was that? bunting with a guy who cant run on first. the logic???

Anonymous said...

Why didn't Girardi PR run for Matsui?

Liam Gallagher said...

Come on Jorge!

Anonymous said...

Well should I answer that for you or do you know?

Liam Gallagher said...

HOMERUN!!!!!!!!!!!

Greg Cohen said...

WOO HOO!!! JORGE JUICED ONE!!

Rich said...

JEFFREY MAIER?

Liam Gallagher said...

Just what we needed.

Will said...

"Why didn't Girardi PR run for Matsui?"

Because Girardi thinks he's coaching cricket.

Anonymous said...

ROFLMAO!

And, I believe it is a HR.

Now, did we actually get TWO hits with RISP in the SAME inning!?!? Wake me I am dreaming.

If so, I apologize to everyone. This team MIGHT be able to hit with RISP.

Although watch these muther scratchers over turn it and screw us. That would be fitting.

Will said...

why doesnt the umpire order the damn indians back into their f'n dugout.

Anonymous said...

WOW, its a HR. I am immediately going to the convenience store and buying lottery tickets...

Greg Cohen said...

That was clearly a home run. There was no need for that 8 minutes worth of nonsense. Anyway, I'm glad they got it right.

Anonymous said...

Oh definitely a HR, not even close.

I think I need to make an appt to see the eye doctor....are we actually winning?

Will said...

Nice walk with two outs to load the bases. Is the Yankees bullpen pitching both halves now?

Anonymous said...

Double your money Greg? I bet you that Ransom hits a grand salami.

Greg Cohen said...

I'm not gonna bet against the Yankees.

Greg Cohen said...

Nice! Choo lost it in sun.

Will said...

amazing. these indians really suck. stopped chasing the ball. that's an error. most they should give ransom is a single.

Greg Cohen said...

I'll take it.

Will said...

way for Ransom to run it out. NOT. this guy want to stay in the majors?

Will said...

Burnett is the man. 3 hits, another solid outing, much better than CC.

Anonymous said...

Wow, how many hits did we have today with RISP? Did we have to use them all up in one game?

Greg Cohen said...

Good win.

anonyMOOSE said...

Random stuff:

1) Screw Pavano.

2) Nice win

3) Albaladejo, despite scaring me throwing all those balls, gets major props there - that was huge. Bruney once again does the job.

4) The Stadium might sound quiter because of the following two things:

a) Different/new microphone setup by YES (this is very likely the reason you might hear what an ump says clearly)
b) The fans (like me) are a bit shell shocked lately with the way things have gone. If the team starts getting in a groove, I think the fans will be more into it. It's tough to get excited with two strikes on the opposing hitter with some of the crazy crap that's gone on.

5) Empty "luxury" seats: Yes, it looks funny. But I'm still not blaming the Yankees. Mega-banks have folded, car companies are in dire straits, etc. Even at half the price, those seats might not be sold out. There are very few people that are willing to spend over $100/ticket for a baseball game, and honestly, despite the fact the stadium just opened, I think that this time of year, against teams like Cleveland, isn't the best draw. When the season heats up, and bigger teams come into town, more of the luxury offerings will be sold.

Will said...

Honestly lots of people will spend $100 a seat for tickets, the yankees are idiots for making these luxury areas so exclusive.

Here is awesome photo serious on how shitting it now is to sit in the luxury section. the luxury sections suck so much luxury ticket buyers won't even want to sit there because they will be sitting alone!!! HAHAHA! Moron CEOs and the Yankees just learned, low and behold, a baseball game is fun because of the team AND the people around you, not just because you're sitting close enough to kiss arod's lips.

Will said...

oh man that was a typo disaster... here is a fix for that bastardized sentence...

Here is an awesome photo series about how shitty it now is to sit in the luxury section.

After looking at all of the MLB, I dont think it really is just our bandbox of a stadium this year that is giving all the home runs! I think that MLB might be juicing the baseball. Just look at other players, they are going nuts with homers. Coco Crisp who has like 10 career homers has 2 already this year. We are only like 10 games in and a lot of people have 6! Dont you guys think that that MLB might be jucing the ball?

Anonymous said...

YES showed where under the freeze the wall in back is open I think if they close that with a closed wall the jet stream will stop.

Vinsanity13 said...

Well, the series finishes with a split, not great but not terrible either.
Of course, what people will remember next week will be the 2 blowouts. But in september, all we'll remember is 2 wins (and maybe Ransom awaking).

So, 2 blowouts are still only 2 losses. I think once A-Rod comes back, the team can be on a roll.
At least I hope!
