News and Notes

- Monday's rainout was officially rescheduled for July 23rd.

- CC Sabathia has not had a lot of success against the A's in his career, going 3-7, with a 6.12 ERA in 15 starts. Last year he was 1-2 with a 6.62 ERA in three starts against Oakland.

- Brett Anderson is just 21-years-old and is one of the players the A's received from the Diamondbacks in the Dan Haren trade prior to last season. This will be his third big league start.

- Chien-Ming Wang had another bullpen session today and it went well. That doesn't really mean much, but at least it's better than finding out he had a bad bullpen session.

- The fine folks over a New York Sports Jerk wanted me to share this article about all those empty seats at the new stadium with you guys. It's definitely worth the read.

Stick around and discuss the game
as it happens in the comments section.

I hope CC pitches a gem and the offense can keep getting hits.

Anonymous said...

A young lefty who we've never seen before. That just spells trouble.

-Nyyfn

Greg Cohen said...

I'm worried about the same thing Nyyfn.

Anonymous said...

I'm tired of hearing about the empty seats. We all know the yankees over priced those seats and have to lower them eventually. Its beating a dead horse.

Greg Cohen said...

I just posted a link to a story. You don't have to read it if you don't want to.

Mario said...

Girardi has no imagination, with the lineups, how about batting CANO 3rd, Tex 4th, while AROD is out, you have to think Cano off to a great start could someday be like ABREU...

Anonymous said...

I don't know about you guys, but Sabathia is starting to piss me off.

Greg Cohen said...

I'm getting there anon.

Geeez, 40 pitches through two innings.

Greg Cohen said...

Back-to-Back and Belly-to-Belly!

Looks like Matsui has his swing back, and Melky has really looked good on both sides of the ball all year.

Anonymous said...

I agree Greg, especially with Melky. He's really been good so far this year. Maybe he should be starting.

Anonymous said...

cc started bad last year and got better so he's a 2nd half pitcher. i wonder how many Lobel's sandwiches he could eat? looks like freddie sez is the yanks first base coach

Greg Cohen said...

Hahahahaha, those are some damn good sandwiches so I'm gonna say 10, maybe more.

I know I could probably put down about 4 maybe 5 if I hadn't eaten all day, and I'm a third of the size of CC.

Anonymous said...

THROW STRIKES CC

Anonymous said...

Fucking shit Damon.

Greg Cohen said...

Unreal, Jeter had that the whole way too. What the hell is Damon doing?

Greg Cohen said...

And now Posada has a brain fart. Good job Jorge.

Anonymous said...

Nice, a 1-2-3 inning. Who knew he had it in him.

Greg Cohen said...

lol he should have had one the inning before, but Damon had other plans.

Anonymous said...

NICE JEET

Anonymous said...

Everytime i hit refresh on the computer espn site they score a run ! YES !

Greg Cohen said...

That was a rocket.

Anonymous said...

Suzuki homerun was a joke. Melky has three homeruns already all hit in yankee stadium. Gardner should start all the road games and Melky should start all the home games and Melky will hit 50 homeruns.

THIS IS NOT BASEBALL!!!!!!

Greg Cohen said...

Yes, that homer by Suzuki doesn't go out anywhere else. I'm actually not even sure that ball was out anyway, stupid fans.

Anonymous said...

darn boston keeps winning up 10-1 right now. we gotta cool them off this weekend

Greg Cohen said...

Yes, we do. I'd also love a doubleplay ball right here.

Anonymous said...

Way to give up that lead CC. Great job.

Mario said...

way to go captain clutch, now can whomever is pitching get it to MO please....

Greg Cohen said...

Nice two-out hitting by the Yanks here, with a little luck for Damon.

Vinsanity13 said...

The Captain rises to .300 again, good to see.

How many times can the Yankees pick CC up today?

Anyway, what he is asked is to pitch good enough for the team to win, he's doing that so far.

Greg Cohen said...

How long is Girardi going to let CC go? I'd take him out now.

Greg Cohen said...

Why is he leaving him in to face Holiday?

Will said...

fuck sake CC, 7 runs. I know its shitty out, but come on.

Anonymous said...

leaving CC in to give up the lead. Joe is really, really trying to lose this game.

Anonymous said...

I don't get it either. He should never have faced Holiday. Bring in a righty.

anonyMOOSE said...

Girardi is an IDIOT. There's NO WAY CC should have come out for the 7th. He was at 100 pitches, giving up 5 runs in 6 innings. He had more walks than strike outs. Just because the guy CAN throw 120 pitches in a game doesn't mean he should do it EVERY FREAKING TIME OUT. Not to mention it's APRIL.

On top of that, the bullpen had a day off Monday, has a day off tomorrow, and only had to pitch two innings yesterday. This is a joke.

Girardi is a complete moron. I can't believe it. I thought his strong suit would be managing the pitchers and he screwed it up AGAIN. This is just insane. I can't even express how upsetting that is.

Vinsanity13 said...

Like you guys, I think Joe let CC face a hitter too many.

7 ER in 6.2 is pretty brutal against this Oakland offense.

Has I said before, I don't know how many times the Yankee offense without A-Rod can pick up CC today. Maybe not anymore.
I certainly hope not! Go Bombers!

Mario said...

the outfield dimensions should have been changed coming into new stadium, this is a freaking joke, tear it down start over...

Will said...

this "CC sucks in April" crap is just that. this is just bs rationalizing. Waldman and Sterling are the latest apologists. if CC sucks in April then push his spring training back to january, or doc his salary by 1/6 since he's only going to show up for 5 months of the season. How many years do you have to suck in April to start doing something to change it?

Anonymous said...

Fire Gerardi and bring back Billy Martin. His corpse could do a better job.

Greg Cohen said...

What do you guys think about the boos?

anonyMOOSE said...

I think the boos should be for Girardi, but right now, they're understandable for CC. You need to be more aggressive against the Oakland A's, especially after the offense supports you with that many runs.

Still, CC would be getting the win today if Girardi had a clue.

jim said...

CC got booed? Yankee fans claim to be intelligent, yet continue to display how little they know about baseball. The level of entitlement amongst the Yankee fanbase is unparalleled.

Greg Cohen said...

How does booing show that anyone does or doesn't know about baseball?

jim said...

Because baseball is a sport almost defined by failure. It is one of the most grueling mental tests. Compound that with the cascade of boos that Yankee fans rain on any player not named jeter, rivera or posada, at any lackluster performance, and you have a fanbase that just doesn't understand the swings of this game. Stir in the entitlement of the post 96 crowd, and you get one of the worst fanbases in all of sports. I'd be embarrassed to be a Yankee fan.

Mario said...

come on jeter, bail us out AGAIN...
Capt. Clutch...

Greg Cohen said...

Pitching is not defined by failure, hitting is. Ace pitchers succeed much more than they fail.

Anyway, I don't see anything wrong with the booing. It depends on why fans boo, and in this case I think CC's game today deserved being booed.

Mario said...

With Nady hurt, we again have NO BENCH.. even when AROD comes back in a few weeks, we still won't have a bench, & bringing up Shelley Duncan doesn't strike fear in me let alone opposing pitchers....

dan said...

pathetic.. bases juiced no outs, and we get no runs..

Anonymous said...

That was horrible and shows exactly why Cabrera has no business playing. He's terrible. The guy couldn't throw strikes and goes hacking away at anything. He is a rally killer period. And, we have no bench thanks to Cashman. How can a $200m team have no bench?

Will said...

bases loaded no outs and no runs? wha?! all boos are well deserved, fans dont pay a lot of money to watch premier pitchers struggle to have one decent start in april or the heart of the order choke on the bases loaded with no outs.

reading some back posts here...

Wang to the DL? You don't say! Finally management is starting to talk some sense.

Also - how did Wang get through the whole winter still needing to build up arm strength? Is it just me or was Yankee trainers and coaches wildly out of touch with its players during the off season? What the heck was going on for 6 months?

Saw that photo from the main level - how does a whole section in the very popular main level end up completely empty?

Mario said...

this season just keeps getting uglier and uglier....the stadium is HR derby, pitching is terrible, offense is seriously inconsistent, the DL already has too many on it...

Greg Cohen said...

That was awful.

Greg Cohen said...

Shouldn't Bruney be in this game now?

Mike B. said...

Bases loaded and no one out and no runs.

On another note, I'm really starting to think Gerardi and his no name coaching staff (Pena aside) are the problem. I know it's early in the season, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a switch made some time this year. I say this admitting that Gerardi was my first choice for manager last year.

Let's go Yanks--hold 'em off!

Mike

Greg Cohen said...

Where's Bruney?

jim said...

That's just it, Greg. Home fans shouldn't boo their own players. Fans don't earn the right to boo because of the money they pay for their seat. Just because everyone on this board is mad that these guys get to play a game for millions of dollars, and many times they don't succeed doesn't mean you have the RIGHT to boo. Seriously, its irrelevant. NY Yankee fans are a joke, and I am fine knowing that even if you dont believe it. I'm surprised no one has given me the "this is NY we expect more from our players..." bullshit yet. Get over yourselves. None of the folks booing in the stands deserve that 27th title, and they don't deserve to claim the other 26.

Mike B. said...

Good question.

Mike

Greg Cohen said...

"Fans don't earn the right to boo because of the money they pay for their seat."

A lot of people would disagree. Those fans pay their salaries.

Will said...

"Fans don't earn the right to boo because of the money they pay for their seat"

oh really? news to you maybe, but they pay the salaries.

Greg Cohen said...

I'm glad he got the job done, but I still think Bruney should have pitched that inning.

Mike B. said...

Fans shouldn't boo? I smell a rat!

Mike

Will said...

i can't wait to hear the nuanced criteria under which fans receive what jim apparently perceives as a privileged to boo. this aught to be epic lols. even hitler would be amused.

Anonymous said...

So according to Jim. All fans should go to a game with the expectation that their team will suck and only cheer when they don't. Fans who pay hard earned money to watch their team give their all, play hard, and if they can win don't have the right to voice thier disapproval when the players don't preform at the level that the player himself will hold himself to. I am sorry but if you have a player who is billed as one of the best pitchers in baseball and he gives up 7 runs the fans can and probably should boo him. This is not just a NY thing because fans in Boston, LA, Seattle, or anywhere else will do the same. A pitcher can struggle and not get booed, just keep your team in the game.

Anonymous said...

If you struggle in New York you get booed. Its been going on for years and the players know it's coming. It is what it is.

Greg Cohen said...

It's not just New York.

Mario said...

how about first walk off win in new stadium, , nice defensive play by TEX to conceed the runner and get the throw..

Will said...

CC hasn't just struggle today. He's had one so-so outing. the rest have been way below subpar. this what the booing is largely about.

Greg Cohen said...

Great play by Cano.

Anonymous said...

nick swisher big hit im calling it

Anonymous said...

Melky getting the big hit i'm calling it.

Greg Cohen said...

Oh no, not Marte!

Will said...

no booing marte.

lead off walk - woooot! oh wait, wrong team.

Greg Cohen said...

Why is he in this game? Is Girardi trying to lose this game?

Greg Cohen said...

Now Edwar?

Where the hell is Brian Bruney?

Anonymous said...

I agree. I am starting to dislike Girardi more and more as the season continues. Everyone used to knock Torre on his use of the bullpen but Girardi isnt much better.

Greg Cohen said...

He made it interesting, but got the job done. Still not liking these moves, though.

I just hope they win it here and I don't have to hate the next move.

Anonymous said...

has it been so empty all game? this is amazing. there's no one there...

Greg Cohen said...

A lot of that has to do with the weather. At least I hope it does.

SteveB said...

Greg, right now in the bottom of the 10th inning-- what percentage of the field & main level box seats are empty, would you say?

Will said...

tex better hit the ball. this .233 average is not acceptable either. lol.

SteveB said...

Count me in as one of the people confused by Girardi's pitching moves. I understand CC starting the 7th, but I would have pulled him after the walk. He didn't have it at that timer. When Girardi went to the mound, he should have made the change then. What I am worried about now, is Steven Jackson making his debut needing to throw 2 innings. Even though the team scored 7 runs, there was no excuse for their performance in the 7th inning. Now the bats are all quiet. This is going to be a game the Yankees will lose but never should have lost.

Greg Cohen said...

Where is Bruney?

And I think around 75% of field boxes are empty and the rest of the stadium looks half full.

SteveB said...

Horrible. They are not selling tickets to real fans, but that was the plan. I took a quick peek on the TV about 1 hr ago and those empty seats make a very bad impression.

I think Bruney comes in for 1 inning after Edwar, if Edwar survives this inning.

Anonymous said...

i think the outfield area of the stadium looks horrendous with so many missing people. the grey coloring of the bleachers is so bland and ugly.

Greg Cohen said...

Great throw and tag by Posada and Cano.

Anonymous said...

Veras vs. Giambi? Yikes.

Greg Cohen said...

Was thinking the same thing. I know there aren't many arms left in the pen, but why is Veras in the game before Bruney?

SteveB said...

So much for what I know. Veras in.

How far do you think Giambino can hit a Veras fastball?

Greg Cohen said...

The announcers just made it seem like Bruney is unavailable. Is he?

Will said...

wtf
please. stop. walking. people.

SteveB said...

Sterling did not say Bruney is unavailable, just the opposite, but you can't go by what any of the radio crew says anymore.

Suzie-Q was complaining that Veras wasn't throwing inside to Giambi.

Greg Cohen said...

Leiter and Kay were talking about Steven Jackson was the only pitcher left in the pen.

SteveB said...

how th' heck do i update your 'comments' popup without going back to your webpage?

Greg Cohen said...

Hit F5 on the keyboard. That should refresh the window.

SteveB said...

i just figured it out. a right click on the mouse works too, thanks. i'll stick with you for this inning bit, i'm done with work for today.

Giese is warming up.

Anonymous said...

What the hell was Jorge swinging at?

Greg Cohen said...

Nobody knows.

SteveB said...

This Outman gives up HRs. 3 so far this season.

Greg Cohen said...

Hopefully they make it 4.

Will said...

is it thursday yet?

SteveB said...

I think it's the only way they are going to score now. All that offense died after bases loaded & no one out in the 7th inning.

Anonymous said...

Bruney has pitched 4 out of the leas 5 games. thats why there trying to avoid pitching him

Mario said...

all these HR's, and now when we REALLY need one, nothing...

SteveB said...

Greg, are you in the bleachers? Do you feel any breeze out there?

Greg Cohen said...

Tomorrow is an off day, one inning won't kill him.

Brian Danuff said...

Hey guys, what's up?

I can't believe the Yankees left the bases loaded in the 7th. This game should have been over over an hour ago. But that was a nice inning by Veras just now.

Will said...

we might need a war to end this thing.

Greg Cohen said...

Hey Yankeeboy,

That seventh inning was pathetic.

I'm pretty shocked that Veras didn't blow the game.

Brian Danuff said...

He was pretty good in the 2nd half last year. Wait, are you at the game Greg?

Greg Cohen said...

No I'm home.

SteveB said...

Oh, sorry, I guess that was last night you were at the game.

For a minute there i was really impressed thinking you were blogging from the ballpark.

I'm going to go watch the game on TV now. It gets me away from John & Suzy. I smell a loss brewing, sad to say. I sure hope I'm wrong.

Brian Danuff said...

Oh. My bad.

Also, this is hilarious. A guy who was wearing a (NY) Rangers jersey was on the camera and Michael Kay said he's missing the Ranger game. It doesn't start until 8:30!

Brian Danuff said...

Also, I don't know why I'm asking this, but has there ever been a year where every single New York team won their respective championships?

Ya know, Yankees win WS, Giants win the Super Bowl, Rangers win the Stanley Cup, and the Knicks win the Finals (which will never happen sadly, unless they get Lebron James).

SteveB said...

Sterling says Jackson is warming up. So give it 2 innings more, if he throws zeros and then it's time for Swisher.

Greg Cohen said...

Yeah, that was yesterday.

I hope your wrong.

Brian Danuff said...

Jackson who?

Brian Danuff said...

Steven Jackson?

Greg Cohen said...

No Yankeeboy, that's never happened. There have been years where two or three teams have won.

Wow, Veras did great. Shocking.

Mike B. said...

I'm on a break from a three-hour class--this game's still going???? Yikes!! I'll check back in after my class ends at 6 central. Root them to victory, guys!

Mike

Anonymous said...

This was a big confidence booster day for the yankees bullpen. They have shut down the A's. But this is a make or break inning for the yanks. u don't want Steven Jackson facing the A's heart of the order

Will said...

I need to call in relief to keep watching this.

Brian Danuff said...

Yeah, great performance by Veras. Ya think if they win this will be a Yankee Calssic on YES? It might since we were down by some runs and then came back.

SteveB said...

Yankeeboy, the Yankees & Mets will never win in the same year...

Veras looked good. Now it's 2 innings of Jackson. Thing is, he's not one of the premier pitchers in AAA.

Gotta win...... NOW!

SteveB said...

This is NOT a 'classic' performance.

Not by the pitchers, the hitters or Girardi.

Brian Danuff said...

I know. I meant all the porfessional championships being in New York, weather its the Yankees or Mets.

Brian Danuff said...

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! So close!

Brian Danuff said...

Finally! A hit!

Greg Cohen said...

Now they just gotta score him.

Brian Danuff said...

There was a moment where Tino Martinez finally became a Yankee with an important home run in late innings at the Stadium. I guess it's not Teix's turn yet.

Anonymous said...

come on Cano!!!!!

SteveB said...

1969-- Mets, Jets, Knicks

1986 maybe? Giants, Mets?

maybe one of the late 1990s years too? devils & yankees?

I feel like I'm missing something

Will said...

classic, the batteries in my radio are dying, even they want it to end.

Brian Danuff said...

come on Robbie!! Drive 'em home!

Brian Danuff said...

Oh my god!!!!! Will this game ever end?!?

Greg Cohen said...

Wow, sticking with Veras, interesting..

Brian Danuff said...

Yeah, I was just gonna say that.

Brian Danuff said...

What a play by Pena!

Greg Cohen said...

The kid is a great fielder.

Brian Danuff said...

I think at the pace Jeter is hitting home runs, he may get about 20 for the first time in about 5 years.

Greg Cohen said...

GREAT JOB VERAS!

That was impressive.

Greg Cohen said...

It's possible Yankeeboy.

Anonymous said...

Swisher is going yard. I'm calling it.

Greg Cohen said...

I hope you're right Anon.

Anonymous said...

Ahhhh I could have sworn the gods told me he was going to win it... Maybe they meant score the run?

Greg Cohen said...

Hahahahaha, I'd take that too.

Greg Cohen said...

MELKY!!!!!!!!!

Will said...

Melky you gotta be kidding!
Thank god its over.

Anonymous said...

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoo!!!!!!1!!!!!!!11!!!!11111!!!

Greg Cohen said...

Did anyone notice Melky pulled a bit of a Manny there?

SteveB said...

Ahhhhhhh......

WONDERFUL!

later, guys--

Bruce Beckett said...

The man who couldn't hit a fly ball with the bases jacked and no outs in the 7th then hit's the w/o homer. It's a funny old game! From zero to hero.

SteveB said...

Give Melky the gold star, but give Veras a big star too. He saved that game with his pitching.

Greg Cohen said...

Bruce,

That's for sure.

Steve,

Couldn't agree more, they're the two players of the game.

Later man.

Greg Cohen said...

That was a good win, didn't want to lose a game like that heading into the Red Sox series.

Thanks for all the comments.

Vinsanity13 said...

What a difference 6 days make!

On OD Sabathia kept the Indians in check but the bullpen blew it in dramatic proportion. This time, Sabathia can't do anything good for 6.2 but Veras&Co are money.

As I said, some guys who were throwing F words at Veras last week must be nursing his balls at this very time (and keeping those words for Sabathia now, since it's his turn to be "another mistake by this piece of garbage that we call our GM").

Anyway, great Yankee win, a bit long, had to rush after my late class to see it and didn't regret it.

Go Bombers.

Anonymous said...

Melky is a confusing player. He looked lost the last 3 at bats and striking out on pitch above his head. All of his hits are homeruns.

Great to see though the yankees getting solid production from Gardner and Melky.

Mike B. said...

YEAH! I just got out of class and heard the good news. Nice!

Way to root them in, guys!

Just got back to my hotel room. Don't know if this played in New York on YES, but I got to the ESPN Zone in DC after work for the 11th inning and on the Oakland TV feed they were showing an older lady sitting in the first row of those expensive seats with a filled martini glass and cocktail shaker. A martini glass and shaker at a baseball game! I couldn't hear what was being said by the announcers but they were laughing. I can see this in a suite, or in one of the lounges, or even out of a flask that was brought in. But in the stands? Drinking a fucking martini in a glass sitting at a baseball game, the whole country is going to shit!
