News & Notes
- On today's pregame A.J. Burnett said that during his six seasons in Florida nobody ever called him by his name, instead they just called him "Badass."
- Check out this article from Sweeny Murti. It's safe to say he doesn't think the first two games of the season are a big deal.
- Here's some very sad news that just hit the baseball world: Angles' rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a car accident last night. Earlier in the night he had thrown six scoreless innings, allowing seven hits, walked three, and struck out five, in what was just his four major league start. He was just 22 years old.
Here's more from ESPN:
According to multiple reports out of the Los Angeles area, three people were killed in the three-car crash in Fullerton, Calif. One person was reported to be seriously injured.
According to the Los Angeles Times, witnesses told police that the driver of a red minivan blew through a red light and hit a Mitsubishi carrying four people.
The Times reported that the minivan's driver ran from the scene, but was arrested about a mile away.
The kid has his whole life ahead of him and it's taken away by some schmuck who runs a red light. Just terrible.
Here's what Joe Girardi had to say about Adenhart: "It's sad. It really is. You think of a young man who realizes his dream and pitches six shutout innings, and drives home and is gone. Life is not supposed to be like that. I didn't even know the kid and it's hard for me. He's just a little boy who dreamed about playing in the big leagues.
"It's one big fraternity, one big family. Your heart goes out to that family and that young man. You realize how precious life is. You wake up every day and be thankful for what you've got, because you never know."

The Yankees have not faced Simon.

If A.J stinks today I will be so pissed.
Hopefully he won't. I just mentioned to SteveB in another thread that Burnett said he was really pumped for this game. And unlike Wang and Sabathia, that might be a good thing for Burnett.
I know A.J is pumped but i'm just worried about getting swept.
It's kinda wired that i'm on blogger now.
I'm only half serious, but how worried should we be that we are facing another pitcher we've never seen?
Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a felony hit-and-run car accident early this morning. Two others (one affiliated with the Angels organization) were killed in the crash, and the offender was caught and hospitalized. Nick was only 22 years old.
I never heard of him. But every time I here something like this hurts me.
Wow just read the story about him. I have heard of him before. He was a promising young pitcher for the Angels. Really sad.
Hopefully they can hit this guy Drew...
Scotty, who has a sad story, Simon?
He was their top pitching prospect from everything I had read on him the last few years That aside though, this story makes me feel sick. 22 years old, had his whole career, his whole life in front of him.
You think the Angels will play tonight? They're talking about canceling the game.
I don't know. It's got to be hard for those guys today.
Let's get a win today. They need it.
True Larry.
Wow, did you just hear that on the pregame?
It was the first time in Yankees history that the two starters that opened the season did not record a strikeout.
Yea I saw that. Unbelievable.
Getting a run or two here would be very big. Give Burnett a little breathing room.
Great fucking start guys.
ZzzzzZzzzzzZzzzz.
This is the definition of our team and that atrocious lineup Girardi came up with. Another day, another joke. 11% of our chances already gone.
Wow, great play Johnny.
I have to agree this lineup is pretty weak at the bottom, but with Posada and Matsui both coming off injuries he doesn't have much of choice.
By the way, that pitch was Burnett was filthy.
A.J. looks like he has his best stuff.
Markakis struck out. Finally we get this guy out
Yup, Burnett was absolutley filthy. I love this signing. I think he is going to be a perfect fit for this team. And, I think our pitching staff will do much better with Molina calling the game than Posada. Personally, I think Posada is a terrible catcher signal wise.
And, yes Girardi has no choice with this garbage lineup and old team. But, put Gardner in the leadoff spot instead of 2 old men. I tired of this junk.
Joe,
It was great to see Burnett go inside on him. He's been hanging over the plate all series, and killing us, so it's about time he had to move his feet.
Already 2 out? Sheesh. I type one message and 2 outs. You're a friggin idiot Cashman.
What did Cashman do?
This isn't a bad team, it's a team of guys who are a little overaggressive right now. If they stay healthy this team will hit.
Wigginton had no chance.
AJ's dealing!
Nice, he's looking great so far. Now if we could only get him a couple runs...
It's what Cashman didn't do, offensively. There isn't a batter on this team that any team is worried about. It has been that way for years.
They are overaggressive right now and tense. But, there is still nothing special about this offensive team. They are ready for the nursing home.
A-Rod and Teixeira?
You need to stop coming to these conclusions after 20 innings of baseball.
Yea I noticed that too Greg. Even Kay and Singleton mentioned that about brushing him off the plate. Anyways, I just don't know about this offense. It is too blah for me. I can't really put my finger on it. Just goes to show how much the Yankees truly value A-Rod's bat in the lineup.
It's too small a sample size to get any idea about this offense. They've scored five runs in each of the first two games, and they've been behind most of the time because of bad starting pitching. I dunno, I think we're going to need to wait a while before we know how good or bad this team is.
20 innings? Have you been watching this team for the last couple of years? How many innings is that? Furthermore, I excluded Tex yesterday so dont bring him up. Arods a fuccking bum. He couldn't hit when it matters if his life depended on it.
You need to stop coming to these conclusions because you think it is a new year. This is the same old garbage offensive team.
Just like that inning. What a joke. Jeter and Damon both got down 0-2 with RISP. You know why? Becuase they stink and nobody is afraid of them. NOBODY! Gardner puts pressure on people. Jeter and Damon don't do shit except hit 2-run HR's when it doesn't matter. Girardi is a moron with this lineup.
Last year was last year. Whether you want to believe it or not, this is a new team. If they had started 2-0 you'd probably be saying how great they are.
Wow anon.
I didn't say this team. I said this OFFENSIVE team. This offensive team is a joke. Scoring 5 runs per game doesn't mean shit when you have been outscored. Its cause and effect.
When this team needs to get ahead, IT CAN'T. That is the same problem that has plagued this old man lineup for a couple of years. This is an undisputable fact.
And, yes, Cashman is a moron for not correcting it AGAIN. Kudos on the Tex signing. That's a winner. But what else? We still have one of the biggest jokes of an outfield in the MLB and Jeter is a huge liability at SS.
I know what you are saying Greg, but I'm not just talking about this year. It just seems that the Yankees have lacked those timely hits that we were so accustomed to in the mid to late nineties for so long now. It is so frustrating to watch sometimes. I just think that us fans get spoiled with how this team looks on paper. When it comes to translating our high hopes to the field we seem to always become disappointed and ask ourselves the question: "Is this the team we thought it was going to be?"
And, they are doing the same exact crap they did last year. They can't hit with RISP and nobody in this league is afraid of this lineup. Its pretty well-known in the scouting circles. You just have rose-colored glasses. The Jeter, Damons, Matsui, Posadas aren't going to get better with age. They are going to get worse. Great job again Cashman.
Well I don't like are outfield that much. But I think Jeter makes the infield very strong so I disagree.
That's fine Joe, but every individual game is not the world series, and that's how a lot of fans act.
3 for 21 with RISP.
What was our problem last year? Whats the gimmick this year. It will get better when Arod comes back? Last year it was Matsui or Posada.
Yes, there are always going to be fans like that, but you have to admit that these first two games have taken a little bit of the excitement out of your belly. All I am saying is that when you look at this team, there is no fire or spark. For example, When Swisher hit that double in the top of the eighth inning the other day, he was so pumped. I haven't seen that in any of the Yankee players in such a long time...
Jeter is a terrible SS. No range whatsoever. He can't go to his right at all. Everyone knows this.
Look you've obviously already made up your mind about this team. But I'm going to wait a little while before coming to any conclusions. It's too small of a sample size.
This is the third game of the season. Pretty much the first month or so doesn't matter that much.
Great f***** pitch.
A.J. just showed a some fire and spark.
Thank You AJ. Show some emotion. AJ, Gardner, Swisher and Tex are people I want on my team. These other emotionless old men can be put out to pasture. I am so sick of this non-chalant, lifeless team.
Yes, way too small of a sample size. You are right. It is just tough to watch this after such an anticipated offseason. I haven't made up my mind. Those late 90's teams just spoiled me so much.
There you go. Teixeira ties it. Way to pick up A.J.
There we go. There is some spark if you ask me.
Those teams spoiled everyone Joe. They were so great.
haha
YES!
No, you made up your mind about this team, not me.
I made up my mind on this team? How so?
Yeah I was 9 when they started their run. So I pretty much grew up with success and had no idea what failure was. Wait a minute, I do live in Buffalo, NY...I take that back. Maybe that is why I love the Yanks so much
oh come on it wasn't that funny...give us a break haha
It was great and funny at the same time. Getting to four Super Bowls is really tough to do, even if you lose them all.
Yea Swisher, big knock!
YES!
Brilliant move Girardi. Now tomorrow, put Swisher back on the bench. Any takers on this bet?
I hope not.
Hahahaha Pavano got destroyed today.
Geeez, 9 earned runs.
Has anyone else noticed that this umpire's strike zone has changed?
Yes David, I have.
Nice, they caught a break.
Yea they did.... and there's another one.
Nice inning, but, of course, had to be ruined by another GIDP by Jeter. It is really becoming a problem.
Jeter's got everything covered today. A GIDP/SO/FO/GO. It is amazing how much of a liability he is everywhere. The Yanks better not sign him when he's a FA.
Solid start for Burnett, good job.
Good job AJ. Thanks for the good pitching performance and giving your team an opportunity to win. Hopefully the BP can hold 'em.
This umpire is very inconsistent.
After 2 games of BP abuse why are they going to the pen already, are they that afraid of AJ's injury problem? He was not in trouble see if he could finish the inning.
Nice job by Coke.
I guess those 2 strike outs answers my question.
hey guys... much better today
Wow Cano is really swinging the bat well.
trying to make all up for last season.
Yep, definitely a much better day in Yankeeland today.
This is how things should be.
Yup. I'm tell you, give this team some time. They need to start getting consistently good starting pitching and they will roll.
And if you notice they're playing some very nice tac-on baseball. Which is great to see.
I have a feeling we will see more games like this as the season goes on... at least a lot more then we saw last year.
Nice inning for Veras.
By the way, to the anonymous poster who asked about the Angels game, it was postponed.
Nice win... Now maybe everyone can relax a little.
It was a good day and if Girardi doesn't give Swisher the nod then he deserves what he gets.
And, I dont think this team will hit good pitching.
Are you ever happy?
Great game.... LOVE the SWISH... totally forgot about the ingame thread... 86 comments!!! this is the spot son!
But anon has a point, Girardi should capitalize now and leave in the Swish until he slows up... the guy is obviously locked in and Nady just doesnt look focused yet. Great game, my boy Brett is doin it too, Tex needed today to keep it goin, big things, gents, BIG THINGS!!!!
ps - bullpen. WOW. Lights out.
Rough day for Hitler
LOL
Derek, I agree about Swisher. Keep him in the lineup as long as he's hitting.
