News & Notes

- Hey Michael Kay, JUST SHUT UP! Lisa Swan over at Subway Squawkers has this post about how the big headed blowhard has been complaining about Nick Swisher's "antics" on the mound yesterday. Kay apparently suggested that Jorge Posada and Derek Jeter talk to Swisher about "the Yankee way." Lisa shares this quote from Kay: "Think about the championship teams of the past, and tell me who the goofball is on it?"

What a freaking crock. Can someone at YES please get rid of this tool? PLEASE!?!?!?!?!

- Johnny Damon is out tonight with the flu. Here's more on Damon from Marc Carig:
Johnny Damon has been preoccupied, dealing with a family health scare. He spent Monday night in Orlando tending to his mother. Damon returned on Tuesday, feeling fatigued with a bad cold. Damon said he hasn't been sleeping well.

"Physically and mentally, he needs a day," Girardi said.

- A.J. Burnett is 7-4, with a 2.98 ERA in 16 career starts against the Rays. He is 2-2, with a 2.30 ERA in seven starts in Tampa. And last season he was 1-2 with a 3.15 ERA in three starts.

- Rays starter Matt Garza is 1-2 with a 4.56 ERA in five games (four starts) against the Yanks. In three starts last year he was 1-1 with a 3.71 ERA.

- According to Chad Jennings, there will be no call-ups for tonight's game. What happens if Burentt gets hammered? I don't know about you, but with Edwar Ramirez, Jonathan Albaladejo, and Phil Coke all likely unavailable this looks like incredibly stupid non-move.

- Not Yankee-related, but Josh Beckett was suspended for six games and fined an undisclosed amount for throwing at former Yankees Bobby Abreu's head in Sunday's game in LA. The incident happened when Abreu called time, and in response Beckett threw Abreu a head-high fastball.

- Boomer Joins TBS: Former Yankee David Wells has joined TBS as an analyst. Here's some quotes from Wells from the NY Post:

"That's something that's not going to happen," Wells said, before quickly adding, "at least I hope not. I'm going to conduct myself in a good fashion."

"But I never thought in a million years I'd be in the booth," Wells said. "You know me and the media, we never saw eye to eye -- or at least I fought you guys every chance I'd get," he added.

"Sure, I probably said a lot of harsh things. But a lot of harsh things were said about me, as well. ... Now that I'm quote-unquote part of the media world, you've got to understand it."

Good for Boomer. he should be pretty entertaining.

Stick around and discuss the game
as it happens in the comments section.

No Damon again. Is he injured? Lineup looks a little stronger tonight with Nady at seven, but that could be misleading with Gardner leading off. Sorry to hear about Josh's suspension. Have to stand up for my little brother!

daneptizl said...

Still no word on who is being called up...

Greg Cohen said...

I have no idea why he's not playing. I hope he's not hurt. Besides that, the only thing I can think of is his 1-for-10 against Garza.

You're little brother? You're kidding, right?

Greg Cohen said...

Nope Dane, no word on that.

Anonymous said...

Lol hopefully he is kidding and if he isn't well I haven't been to the new stadium yet but that deserves a walkthrough the bleachers with a sox jersey on ahahah. But then again as you learn with family you can't always pick although sometimes ya wish you could !!

I am just happy to see Tex back .. I love him at first and ya know what the yankees are slow EVERY April its just what we do and we as fans lose our hair during it..

Then the summer is a different story they dont call it "Summer in the Bronx" for nothing !!

Go YanKKS!!!!

Jeff said...

I am sick of hearing about the "Yankee way" whatever that is supposed to mean. First was the Joba fist pump now a player is getting a hard time because he smiled during a game? Smiled!?!

Do guys like Michael Kay and Goose Gossage even follow the Yankees? Do they know anything about the antics of guys at least some of us have heard of, namely Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth or Roger Maris? Not sure where their on and off field behaviors fit into Kay's twisted notion of the "Yankee way". Go to the library Kay, read some books, and actually learn about the team that's made your career.

Greg Cohen said...

Anon,

I'm happy to see Tex back too. But as far as the April slow starts goes, that has to stop. I don't consider this a slow start yet because it's just seven games, but it would be nice to see the Yanks at least 5 games over .500 at the end of April. Get off to a start like that, and the "Summer in the Bronx" will be even better.

Jeff,

Well said, I agree completely.

That should be pretty funny. Good for Boomer.

finally a game I can watch - oh shit except I dont even have a tv. oh wait I have a little 9" in the closet.

Anonymous said...

The Yankees problem is that they could look fantastic one night and awful the next. Remember though, A-Rod and Tex are not in the lineup. They make such a big difference. I mean, as much as I hate A-Rod, he's better than Ransom in every possible way. Also, Jeter and Damon have to get going.

However, I have lost all my confidence in Wang. He's been pitching like garbage ever since the foot injury. Why? Does it have to do with him smoking? Athletes really shouldn't smoke. It causes fatigue, shortness of breath, and for David Cone, it may have caused his shoulder aneurysm. Even Keith Hernandez admitted that he'd be a much better ballplayer had he not smoked. Just in case your wondering, I remember hearing or seeing some story where Wang was smoking a cigarette and he said because everyone from Taiwan does it. Again, not sure if that's his problem this year. Just a concern.

Greg Cohen said...

Will,

What happened to your TV?

Anon,

I believe you're right, I think Wang does smoke. Is it effecting him? It's definitely possible. But right now I think he's just going through some problems with his mechanics.

As for the team as a whole, I think they'll be fine.

Vinsanity13 said...

I don't know what people have against Michael Kay. IN personnaly love his broadcasts and even more his radio show.

Anyway, didn't Girardi said he would stick with Ransom at 3B like yesterday? Did not take long go change his mind!

Will said...

Anon, Tex is back tonight (allegedly). As for fantastic one night weak the next, leaving aside Wang for the moment, the problem is the pen. The line up is delivering reasonable amounts of runs, and the rest of the starters are solid. CC had one bad start, his problem certainly looks fixed, there is no reason no to believe he won't end the season near 20 wins or more. The problem is the pen which can't even hold a close game. So its not that they might suck one night, might be great the next. The starters will give you 7+, and the lineup will produce 5+ runs a game. The problem is starters are bound to falter a bit 15% of the time no matter how awesome - then things are left to the pen - which is makes games look like reruns of Apocalypse Now.

Will said...

Greg it blew up election night. No joke - started popping - going crazy - the whole screen went out - had to throw the circuit breaker cause I wasn't going to go near the thing.

Greg Cohen said...

Vinsanity,

I like his radio shot for the most part. I think he's dead wrong about Swisher, but I don't mind his show overall.

I can't stand listening to him call a game, though. He obsessed with not sounding like a homer, so much so that he overcompensates and ends up getting more excited when the opposing team does something. He was much better when he was on the radio and didn't take himself so seriously.

As for Girardi and Ransom, I have no idea why he tells the media one thing and does the other, makes no sense, but I'm glad he made the move.

Greg Cohen said...

Wow, that's messed up Will.

Brian Danuff said...

Here we go! Game time baby! I feel a W coming!

GO YANKS!

Greg Cohen said...

Hey B-Boy,

I hope you're right. A couple early runs would be nice.

Brian Danuff said...

Well Gardy is on to begin the inning, Jeet is up...

Hitler said...

Bitch.

Greg Cohen said...

Yup nice start.

Greg Cohen said...

Oh no......

Hitler said...

Hay, where's Liam? I hope he's dead.

Brian Danuff said...

Alright! Jeet on first, Gardy on 2nd, and Teix is up! Come on, bomb it out of the park!

As for you Hitler, get a life.

Greg Cohen said...

Don't say that, it's more messed up than your name.

Brian Danuff said...

He's not dead Hitler, but I bet he wishes you were.

Hitler said...

There should be NO children on this site.

Greg Cohen said...

Gardner is on third

Hitler said...

FUCK! And liam's dead.

Greg Cohen said...

And the bases are loaded with Yankees for Cy Young Swisher.

Brian Danuff said...

Right, my bad. Bases loaded for the great pitcher Swish!

Brian Danuff said...

LOL I typed the same thing and posted it at the same time Greg.

Greg Cohen said...

hahah.....

Come on Swisher, need some runs here.

Anonymous said...

notice how KAY loves swish tonight lmao

Greg Cohen said...

Yea, and all day he's bashing him on the radio... Classy dude.

Brian Danuff said...

Man, Swish down on strikes.

Liam Gallagher said...

HaHa Greg.

Good job Jorge... 1-0 Yanks.

Hitler said...

Greg Cohen said...

I'm glad they got that run, but with bases loaded and nobody out one run is not something to be proud of.

Liam Gallagher said...

Ya, I gotta go. Have a great night.

Greg Cohen said...

Alright, later Liam.

Anonymous said...

Burnett looks sharp.

Brian Danuff said...

I like how Joe is giving Pena a start. He won't be around much when A-Rod comes back. Plus, you want to get him some MLB experience because he is projected to be the starting shortstop for the Yankees by 2011.

Brian Danuff said...

Yeah, Anon, A.J. does look good.

Greg Cohen said...

I completely agree Yankeeboy.

Greg Cohen said...

Wow, what a nasty breaking ball.

Anonymous said...

Pena looks likes Ransom up there.

Brian Danuff said...

Anon, it's one at-bat. Give him a break.

Greg Cohen said...

Give the kid more than an at-bat to prove himself.

Here's an update on Damon from Marc Carig:

"Johnny Damon has been preoccupied, dealing with a family health scare. He spent Monday night in Orlando tending to his mother. Damon returned on Tuesday, feeling fatigued with a bad cold. Damon said he hasn't been sleeping well.

"'Physically and mentally, he needs a day,' Girardi said."

Brian Danuff said...

I hope he's alright. Damon is such a cool guy. I met him about a year ago at a Yankee game.

Nick Swisher will you marry me?, these guys need to shut up about having a problem with a baseball player smiling after he struck out someone god its stupid

Brian Danuff said...

Dan, you are absolutely right.

Anon,

I know it's rediculous how they're bashing Swish. If Cone got a chance to play third base for an inning with the Yankees down by 10 he would be freaking out.

Greg Cohen said...

Sorry Will, Hitler was being a douche bag and going overboard.

Will said...

"maybe he and CC could be a new version of the Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling duo... but better teammates"

and without the god awful white turtlenecks.

i like that up an in pitch to Longoria... sit down

Will said...

"Hitler was being a douche bag and going overboard."

Well, he is _Hitler_ after all. ;)

ARod is amused.

Greg Cohen said...

I'll give Coney credit for saying that the Rays have no reason to be upset about anything last night.

... By the way, Burnett just earned a ton of points in my book for giving Longoria chin music after Garza threw in to Swisher. Great job.

Brian Danuff said...

LOL Will!

dan said...

Burnett has a something that rhymes with ho-ho

Greg Cohen said...

Mojo?

dan said...

no-no

Will said...

Ok, so Burnett is cruising nicely it seems. AJ got a lot of injury trash talk during the spring. If he truly has the injury thing under control, this guy is going to be the backbone. He's way more calm in the head than CC. CC will be awesome, but when the Yankees must have a win, Burnett is going to be the man. Only comment I have otherwise is I'd like see his pitch count a little lower, he's in the mid 50s now. I'd like to see him at 90 pitches after 8 innings.

Greg Cohen said...

STOP IT!

I was giving you a way out.

dan said...

i didnt want to say it... some ppl are superstitious, when it comes to no hitters I am not..

Greg Cohen said...

Fair enough.

i have a damn Economics test on Thursday at 12.. :(

it will prob take 45 mins- 1 hour.. I have another class after but Im not going

63 pitches thru 5

Greg Cohen said...

Good pitch count.

Brian Danuff said...

I don't want to jinx it, but A.J. is looking really good. Ya never know...

Greg Cohen said...

He does look great.

Brian Danuff said...

I'm getting nervous. I hate watching near no-hitters because I hate to look at the TV after every pitch to see if a base runner is on.

dan said...

its only thru 5 innings, he still has 12 more outs...... imagine one night u score 15, the next u cant get a hit

Greg Cohen said...

I just wish the Yankees had a bigger lead. That's all that's bothering me right now. As far as that other thing goes, it's a lot of fun watching those kind of games. Nerve wracking, but fun.

dan said...

SWISH!!

YankeesChief24 said...

Double for Swish...he is on fire!

Greg Cohen said...

He's ridiculous right not.

Hey Chief,

Seriously, the guy is hitting everything they throw up there.

Will said...

Swisher YOU SUCK!!!!

Greg Cohen said...

Will, what?

Did that hitler douche steal your name?

too bad he struck out before with bases loaded..

Anonymous said...

Wow i dont know where i have been the past 2 years but i never realized the devil ray on the side of the rays jersey meanwhile the front has rays of sun on it .. hmmm, i guess you dont forget where ya came from ...

Will said...

Burnett has a lot of strike outs tonight, with fly balls and ground outs pretty evenly split.

He's not a complete game pitcher. Only throwing 19 over 11 seasons, high was 4 in 2005.

If he was injury prone from throwing too hard (mlb says average fastball is ~91) then it would be good to seem him evolve into more of a ground ball pitcher with less strikeouts. hone the curve, and a 91 fastball will work wonders and keep him off the DL.

dan said...

what if he has like 105-110 pitches after 8? keep him in?

Greg Cohen said...

lol Nobody is within 20 feet of Burnett in the dugout.

Greg Cohen said...

You have to Dan.

Will said...

evolving into more of a ground ball pitcher will get his era down too and he could work later into games.

Anonymous said...

yea, Kay and Cone just said fans are very superstitious and we will bug on him tomorrow if AJ doesnt get IT and he still continues to bring it up

Will said...

"what if he has like 105-110 pitches after 8? keep him in?"

yank him. tough luck with the no-hitter. Wang sucked, they need several good consecutive starts in case the Wang situation doesn't improve over night.

Anonymous said...

It is coming full circle ESPN has it up on MLB section, MLBtonight keeps viewing in game .. wow .. very exciting

Brian Danuff said...

but he also said they talked about a no-no during David Well's, David Cone's, Jim Abbot's, and Dwight Gooden's no hitters, and they got it.

Greg Cohen said...

The fact of the matter is if he's gonna get it he's gonna get it, if he's not, he's not. It's just annoying hearing it every three seconds.

Jon Bachrach said...

How many yankee no hitters have there been in yankee history?

dan said...

i agree Greg

Greg Cohen said...

Damn it!

dan said...

fuck!! o well

Greg Cohen said...

Alright, let's just get the damn win now.

Brian Danuff said...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Will said...

it is annoying hearing it every 3 seconds, and I can't even hear it. TV announcers suck. They sit there and feed of the visual teet offering nothing. Radio announcers always give you more info and more incite because they have to fill that dead time. So you learn things like - how many Ks, ground balls, pitch count, how many innings he threw last year, complete games... the big question with a no-no is can the pitcher last the full nine, or will he burn out in the middle of the 8 - whats his history. TV blows, those people are over paid stooges, I'd rather hear a computer voice just robotically call the game. At least it would be cool because the announcer would be a robot.
