Some People Really Need To Slow Down

Bob Klapisch is one of those people. If you read his column from Tuesday you would have read an article titled, "Klapisch: Money for nothing in CC, Teixeira." That was after one bad game. Now today we get this after one good game from A.J. Burnett, an article called "Klapisch: Burnett passes his gut check."

Burnett has the stuff (96-mph heat), the guts (he threw that decisive curve with the bases loaded and a full count) and the stoic nature to lead the Yankees. He’s quiet, but not in a meek, Chien-Ming Wang sort of way. Fierce, but not on the dangerous roller coaster that Kevin Brown used to ride.

Instead, Burnett combines the necessary composure and blow-away velocity that could turn him into a 20-22 game winner this year. Crazy, isn’t it? The Yankees’ wildest gamble, plunking down $82.5 million to a pitcher with a long history of injuries, could turn out to be the wisest decision they made this winter.

Talk about the king of the knee-jerk reactions.

Of course those things could happen. Burnett could win 22 games down the road, maybe, and maybe he will turn out to be the "wisest decision they made this winter." Both of those are possible, unlikely, but possible. However, we all know that if Burnett has two bad games writers like Bob will pull a complete 180 and start asking questions like "Does he has the makeup to be a Yankee?" or "Can he handle the new stadium?" or whatever other nonsense they decide fits the story of the day.

Look, I'm happy Burnett pitched well yesterday too, but can we please wait at least 10 minutes before deciding whether someone is a "wise signing" or a bust? Well, I guess not, because after three games we already know - from Bob - that CC and Tex aren't worth the money, and Burnett is the real deal. Thanks Bob, I'm glad you could clear that up.

Burnett is the real deal if he stays healthy like last year... CC and Tex are going to be great.. I said it once before and I'll say it again, when we make the playoffs I expect Burnett to pitch like Beckett does in the postseason.. he's got the stuff and the makeup to do it.. when they signed him I thought he had the chance to shine in NY. many of my friends hated the signing, but I liked it.. after watching him in spring training I felt like he could be our best pitcher... we'll see

Believe me, my argument in not that he won't be a great Yankee. I just get sick and tired of these writers making these conclusions after one start.

yeah, i know thats why i dont even read the papers... we can draw better conclusions out of the games than they can

Greg Cohen said...

Ain't that the truth.

It's Bob Klapisch, this is what he does.

Burnett really pitched well, but give CC and Teix a break. CC had one bad start and Teix had a bad series. Everyone has bad days.

Greg Cohen said...

You have a point Leonora.

And Liam, you're right, people need to give some of these players a bit of a break. Nothing can be determined after one start.

Greg Cohen said...

By the way Leonora, just checked out your site and added you to my blogroll. Nice work.

Every all-star player has there ups and downs. A-Rod strikes out a lot, but he still posts great numbers.

This is the kind of nonsense you get when you have column inches to fill and no talent to fill them.

This "every game is its own season" thing they have with the Yankees has got to stop. If Sabathia goes out and throws a shutout in his next outing, does that mean he's going to go 25-1 for the season?

It's absurd.

Hitker? Thats some name.

Better now?

Greg Cohen said...

Hitler was a dude, I figured you're a dude... I dunno. Why, you're not a guy?

Liam Gallagher said...

Ok Hitker.

Greg Cohen said...

Hey Hitler or Hitker, do you have anything to say about the article about? Bob Klapisch? Burnett? Baseball?

Back to Glory said...

Well said Greg...I agree with your assessment of waiting on these guys before crowning them a wise choice. However, the questions on whether these guys can handle the stadium or having what it takes to be a yankee are legitimate things we shoudl be asking every start until the ring comes. I am doing that every game I watch.

HitLwr said...

Yes I do mr. a-hole. Everyone on the team sucks and they should all trade there players. AND ITS HITLER

Greg Cohen said...

Back to Glory,

But one game is never enough of a sample size, regardless of how well or poorly a player does in that game. In fact, Roger Clemens had a bad first year before figuring out New York (using HGH) and winning a Cy Young here.

Liam Gallagher said...

Hitlwr stop saying bad things to people.

Liam Gallagher said...

Did Clemens go 14-10 that year?

Greg Cohen said...

Yes, with a 4.60 ERA.

Hitler said...

The best record for the yankees that year.

I agree everyone needs to calm down. You have to wait atleast 25-30 games before being concerned or judging anything in a baseball season. This is not football.

Liam Gallagher said...

I think your wrong Hitler.

Liam Gallagher said...

Yes this is not football. I would wait till June to start talking like this. And remember we donn't have A-Rod.

Does anybody have today's lineup? I am looking everywhere for it and I can't find it. I usually find it around this time, but I haven't yet.

Greg Cohen said...

Not sure yet but I know Swisher is starting and batting 7th.

Brian Danuff said...

Yeah I just found that out as well, and Nady is sitting.

Ya, we need a win today.
