Make it four losses in a row for our Yankees as they dropped the opener of their series with the Tigers 4-2. Justin Verlander was brilliant, throwing seven shutout innings. He allowed seven hits, struck out nine, and did not walk a batter. The Yankees had a few opportunities, but once again failed to come up with anything that resembled a big hit.
CC Sabathia pitched a good game, not great, but good. In eight innings he allowed four runs on six hits, struck out seven, and did not walk a batter. He had great stuff all night and was consistently in the strike zone. Of his 99 pitches, 70 of them were strikes. He was actually pretty great all night besides that damn sixth inning. For the third game in a row a Yankees starter had that one inning that just completely kills the team. Burnett's five-run fourth on Saturday, Pettitte's three-run fifth yesterday, and CC's three-run sixth today.
With nobody on and one out Curtis Granderson laid down a very nice drag bunt for single, Placido Polanco following with an RBI double, and Magglio Ordonez followed that with a two-run homer. And just like that a 1-0 game was now 4-0.

But Bobby Seay came into the game and got Johnny Damon to pop out to right, Mark Teixeira to fly out to deep left just missing and three-run homer, and struck out Hideki Matsui.
In the top of the ninth the Yanks were finally able to break through for a couple of runs off Tigers' closer Fernando Rodney. Posada got jammed on a 1-1 pitch and rolled into a rally-killing doubleplay. It also looked like he wasn't hustling down the line. I know he's slow, but he looked extra slow on this play.
Now it's up to Phil Hughes to end the Yankees' four-game losing streak tomorrow night at Comerica. It will be Hughes' first start of the season, and I can't imagine the added pressure of trying to stop a losing streak will help him. Hopefully I'm wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.

The only positive was CC pitched a complete game. Our worn out bullpen now had two straight days off. With Pettite and Melancon only pitching on Sunday.
Most nights CC wins the game with the pitching line he had from tonight's game.
I want to see Girardi start moving the baserunners, stealing, hit & running. Let's get guys into scoring position with less than 2 outs.
Runners in scoring position; We don't bring them in. We had 2 on and no outs in the 4th or 5th, and nothin happened. Sorely missing A-Rod and Nady's bats.
something has to give this is getting rediculous...they either hit the crap out of the ball and cant pitch...or we pitch good and cant get more then two runs..our bullpen cant get anyone out when we keep giving them leads..i can not wait for may...hopefully things will turn around then.i know im on a rant here but the thing that ticks me off the most is we should have won two out of three in boston...man the PISSES ME OFF!!! 2outs in the ninth and a 6-0 lead...sorry im done...LETS GO HUGHES
Watching Posada yesterday made me sick. He took a leisurely stroll down the first base line, the entire time keeping his head turned to watch the play unfold. Even at his age he could have kept his head down and beat out that throw, keeping the inning alive and letting a runner score. Get over yourself already Jorge and try to put forth some effort.
The biggest goat continues to be Tex he has done nothing, never thought I said this but I cant wait until A-Rod gets back. I dunno but Joe G should bat Cano in front of him instead.

No Wags, I don't think it's time to panic yet. Let's see how they finish this series in Detroit and then how they handle the next homestand.
I agree with Greg. If this team can be over .500 (even if its only a few games) by the time we get A-Rod back we wont be in that bad of a position. As the season moves on the pitchers should be in full rythm, they should go on some good winning streaks...Dont forget theres still 140 games to play!!!
Girardi has been unimpressive so far. Just wanted to throw this out there....Hughes goes out tonight and pitches great. (7IP 5H 1ER 7K's)? Joba to the ailing pen and Hughes staying up in the rotation?

For the Yankees to even consider moving Joba back to the pen, they'll first need Chien-Ming Wang prove he can pitch again. Right now, with Hughes, they only have five starters.
