... the Yanks were privately a lot more optimistic by Sunday that Xavier Nady could avoid Tommy John surgery and that he might be able to return in June and form a righty-lefty DH platoon with Hideki Matsui. Of course, that would mean the Yanks were carrying two players who did not play the field, which hurts roster construction. Also, that is assuming that Matsui's fragile knees could last.I don't like the idea of having two players who can't play defense on the roster at same time, but I do like the right-lefty DH platoon.
What do you guys think?

I think this is great news obviously Matsui can not DH every day so when Girardi has to sit out Matsui are lineup gets weaker. Having Nady as the right handed DH and a pinch hitter will improve are depth and bench.
Swisher is the everyday right fielder and Melky is the late inning defensive right field replacement.
That works for me too.
I'm not sure this is great news. I want Nady healthy too but this creates a big log jam of "Giambi" type players. To me this takes away DH at bats from Jorge and to me having him healthy is much more important then finding DH at-bats for Matsui/Nady. One makes sense but two isn't giving you more depth if they can't jog to a popup or hit a cut-off man. When does Austin Jackson become part of this conversation?
Jackson becomes a part of this conversation in 2010, or maybe September 2009.
This is a one-season problem and indicates how worried the Yankees are about Matsui making it through the season I think.

I agree I think this is more relevant to Matsui as far as the Yankees are concerned. My gut feeling is that Matsui won't make it through this season so having Nady available to DH might end up being a positive.
Every time Godzilla runs to first I cringe.
