The SWB Yankees suffered their 4th straight shutout and 5th loss in a row with a 2-0 defeat from Charlotte (White Sox). They are scoreless in their last 44.1 innings. The loss drops them to 23-10.
PITCHING: Casey Fossum got the start for the Yanks and took the loss (1-1). In the 1st, Fossum K'd the first 2 batters he faced before giving up 2 singles, one to former Yankee Andy Phillips. A wild pitch moved them up to 2nd & 3rd, but Fossum got a groundout to get out of the jam. Fossum was perfect in the 2nd & 3rd, picking up 3 more K's. Fossum gave up 2 runs in the 4th on 4 singles to give Charlotte a 2-0 lead. He threw a scoreless 5th after giving up a triple with 2 outs. Fossum got 2 quick outs in the 6th before being relieved after an infield hit.
Fossum's line: 5.2 IP, 2 runs, 9 hits, 7 K--0 walks, 94 pitches--59 strikes, 6 groundouts--4 flyouts. Fossum loss (1-1)
BULLPEN: Jose Valdez relieved Fossum in the 6th. Chris Stewart threw out the runner trying to steal for the 3rd out. Valdez worked out of a jam after allowing 2 singles getting a strikeout-throwout DP. Valdez struck out the side in the 8th. Eric Wordekemper tossed a perfect 9th inning, with 1 strikeout.
OFFENSE: Former Yankee Jose Contreras got the start for Charlotte. Contreras was in trouble every inning. He went 6 scoreless innings, 3 hits, 5 K--5 walks. SWB had a runners in scoring position in the 1st when Doug Bernier and Todd Linden walked, but were stranded. In the 2nd, Chris Stewart singled, Luis Nunez walked, stranded. In the 3rd, Eric Duncan doubled, again stranded Austin Jackson had an infield hit in the 4th, but a DP erased him. 5th Inning, Bernier HBP, Linden walked, wild pitch moved them to 2nd & 3rd and of course they were stranded. Bernier singled in the 7th, but was erased on a DP. Linden had a leadoff walk in the 8th, but was erased by another DP.
NOTES: Eric Duncan snapped an 0-34 slump with a double in the 3rd inning. ... Pitcher Jason Stephens sent down to AA Trenton. ... Kevin Russo (hamstring), and John Rodriguez (hand), did not play. ... Shelley Duncan still on DL with sore left shoulder. ... George Kontos gets the start against Charlotte Thursday. ... Chien-Ming Wang will start for Scranton on Sunday against Columbus.
