The SWB Yanks defeated the Norfolk Tides (Orioles) 5-1 to up their season record to 18-4.
PITCHING: Casey Fossum was picked up by SWB on a minor league deal. SWB was short starters with Phil Hughes in NY, and Ian Kennedy and Jason Johnson on the DL. Fossum was 0-0 with a 0.82 ERA with Buffalo. He was called up to the Mets and made 3 relief appearances before being released. Fossum threw scoreless 1st & 2nd innings. Norfolk tied the score at 1 in the 3rd on a bloop single, double, and wild pitch. Fossum got the first two men in the 4th before being relieved when he reached his pitch count.
Fossum's line: 3.2 IP, 1 run, 2 hits, 4 K's, 2 walks, 75 pitches-46 strikes, 4 groundouts-4 flyouts.
BULLPEN: Jose Valdez relieved Fossum in the 4th and got the final out of the inning. Valdez tossed scoreless 5th & 6th innings allowing 2 infield hits. He was credited with the win, 2-0.
Steven Jackson came on to finish the game with 3 shutout innings. He allowed 2 singles and picked up 2 strikeouts. Jackson picked up his 1st save.
OFFENSE: David Pauley started for Norfolk and flirted with disaster every inning he pitched. He worked out of bases loaded jams in the 1st and 3rd. SWB broke out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd. Austin Jackson and Eric Duncan singled, PJ Pilittere laid down a sac bunt, and Luis Nunez got the run in with a ground out.
In the 4th, the Yanks picked up 4 runs. Pilittere singled, Luis Nunez doubled. Doug Bernier, John Rodriguez, and Todd Linden followed with RBI singles. Chris Malec drove in the 4th run of the inning on a bases loaded walk to give SWB a 5-1 lead. SWB had 10 hits 4 hits thru the first 4 innings. That was all the scoring in the game.
NOTES: Todd Linden extended his hit streak to 17 games. Chris Malec got the start at 1st base in place of Juan Miranda who was ill. Yankee pitching has held Orioles phenom Matt Weiters to 3 of 13 with 0 RBI in the first 3 games of the series. Eric Hacker makes his 2nd start for SWB Sunday in the series and homestand finale vs Norfolk.
