(AAA) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (20-5) lost Indianapolis 3-1: Box Score - Recap
The SWB Yankees were defeated at Indianapolis (Pirates) by a score of 3-1. The loss drops the Yanks record to 20-5 on the year.
PITCHING: Kei Igawa got the start for the Yanks and pitched a very nice game, allowing only 1 run in 6.1 innings. He tossed a perfect 1st inning. In the 2nd, he gave up a leadoff homer to give Indy a 1-0 lead. That homer was the 10th of the year given up by Igawa. He leads the IL in that category. Igawa gave up a 2-out triple in the 3rd to highly touted Andrew McCutchen, but got a strikeout to get out of the jam. He threw a scoreless 4th, giving up a 2-out walk. Igawa struck out the side in the 5th inning. He worked out of a bases loaded jam for scoreless 6th. Igawa got the first out in the 7th and was relieved by Jose Valdez. He left with the scored tied 1-1. Igawa's line: 6.1 IP, 1 run, 3 hits, 6 strikeouts--1 walk. 91 pitches - 62 strikes, 5 groundouts - 8 flyouts.
BULLPEN: Jose Valdez relieved Igawa with 1 out, nobody on base in the 7th. Valdez gave up 2 runs on 4 walks and a single to give Indy a 3-1 lead before being relieved. Was that Jose Valdez or Jose Veras? Valdez took the loss (2-1).
JB Cox relieved Valdez with the bases loaded - 2 outs. Cox got the final out. Cox threw a perfect 8th, picking up 2 strikeouts.
OFFENSE: The Yankees tied the game at 1 in the 6th inning on singles by Chris Stewart, Kevin Russo and John Rodriguez. Todd Linden then walked to load the bases with no outs. Shelley Duncan, Juan Miranda, and Austin Jackson were retired to strand the bases loaded and blow a golden opportunity. SWB had the go ahead run thrown out at the plate in the 7th when Stewart doubled and Russo singled. Stewart was shaken up when he was thrown out at the plate attempting to score. SWB threatened in the 8th when Linden and Miranda walked. Jackson was then robbed of an extra base hit to end the threat.
NOTES: Todd Linden's 19 game hit streak was snapped. Yankees resigned Humberto Sanchez, placing him on AA Trenton DL. Catcher Kevin Cash off the DL. Catcher PJ Pilittere sent to AA Trenton. Catcher Chris Stewart left the game in the 7th inning after being shaken up trying to score at home. Tampa catcher Jesus Montero returned to action as DH after leaving Monday's game with a leg injury.
