Bruney Blames Umps For Injury

From the AP via SI.com:
Ready to return from the disabled list, New York Yankees reliever Brian Bruney blamed an 8 1/2-minute wait during an umpires' video review for causing a strained flexor muscle in his right elbow.

Bruney went on the disabled list April 25, six days after he was warming up in the bullpen during the seventh inning when umpires checked video before upholding a home run by teammate Jorge Posada. Bruney then entered in the eighth and got three outs.

"Major League Baseball needs a way to figure out if it's a home run or not," Bruney said Monday. "It shouldn't take 8 1/2 minutes, and I think that's what screwed me up."

Bruney pitched just once after the April 19 game, throwing an inning on April 21 before going on the DL. He said it was obvious to him from the first replay that Posada's drive just over the right-field wall against Indians reliever Jensen Lewis was a home run.

He called the players' association and learned only then that replays are provided to umpires from a central location.

"I don't know what the 8 1/2 minutes was all about," he said. "I don't know if like somebody was on lunch break or what."

Bruney kept on warming up, not sure how long it would take for umpires to return to the field.

"I could have quit throwing, I could have waited and started again," he said. "I don't know if he's coming out in 30 seconds or 3 minutes or 8 1/2 minutes. It turned out to be the latter. I mean, that's a long time for a reliever to be throwing or any pitcher to be throwing."

Relievers shouldn't be forced to throw that long because of slow umpires, but at the same time I don't think the umps deserves the blame for this one. Bruney and bullpen coach Mike Harkey, should have known better and "quit throwing" until they got a better idea of what was going on.

It's 2009 you're telling me you can't get a TV monitor right by one of the dugouts or something closer than how they have it now. Really think about it there is no explination you can give me that justifys then having to walk all the way back to this central location to do the review.

I agree it's not the umps fault. Yea it shouldn't have taken over 8 minutes but he should have stopped/slowed down or they should have started warming somebody else up just in case right when the replay started.

I agree, the way they handle these replays is absurd.

Yeah but the pitching coaches are not blameless. This has been a good streak of wins but Dave Eiland still has to go or start explaining what he actually does.

The only reason I don't blame Eiland for this is because he was in the dugout and probably had no idea Bruney was throwing for that long. Should he have known? Probably.

I can't believe a "major league" pitcher is bitching about throwing for eight and a half minutes. If there is a quicker way to review a play, then it should be done more efficiently. I think we can all agree on that. But, give me a break. If your elbow can't hold up to extra throws, or if you don't have enough common sense to pace yourself, then you shouldn't be in the big leagues in the first place.

this is nonsense, all sorts of events could disrupt the time a reliever has to warm up - an at bat could 10 minutes if the batter and pitcher r really dualing, your own team might hit longer than expected, pinch hitter runner substitutions could jumble when you might enter, rain, swarm of gnats. he's gotta buck up.

I think that the Yankees should move to L.A., with as many injuries that they get they could hire a full time Los Angeles injury lawyer and make more money off suing people than off the concessions.
